Enthusiasm for the car hobby is usually best shown in the stories of enthusiasts themselves. Sometimes you come across people like Martin, in whom that enthusiasm is immediately visible. That is contagious; he effortlessly draws you into his story. He doesn't have to dig deep into his memory to put it down on paper.

The power of the past

Martin: “I’ve always had a thing for classic cars. From the age of 18 to 24, my first cars were a Citroën Dyane 6, VW Golf mk1 and a Citroën 2CV. Sold them all. Finally, I bought a Volvo Amazon. When I moved to Amsterdam after my studies, I unfortunately sold that one too. Due to circumstances, I bought another classic car two years ago: a 1967 Ford Taunus 12M P6. We used to have one like that at home when I was 4 or 5 years old; the first car I can remember. I still remember how sad I was that it was gone. I called it the car with the eyes, because the taillights looked like eyes to me.

Martin: “The Mustang has been in the Netherlands for over 30 years, since 1996. It moved with the owner from Sonoma, California, to the Netherlands. She had received it from her father that same year, for an estimated value of 500 dollars. A wonderful gesture, and also clear that the sentimental value of this gesture was much higher than the monetary value.”

A piece of history

Martin: “Nothing was done with the Mustang all that time, until a restorer got to work on it. After the Mustang was almost completely finished, the owner moved to Sweden. This time, the Mustang didn't move with him, but came up for sale. I was just too late and it was off the market. But shortly afterwards, it came along again. And this time I didn't let the opportunity pass me by and bought it immediately. That is how I eventually became the owner.”

After the American black plate, I am the first to register it in the Netherlands, so you could say that I am officially only the second owner. The Mustang has many nice upgrades, and I have added a number of original parts myself. It is a rock-solid Mustang with several nice upgrades, such as an Edelbrock intake, Holley carburetor, and Hooker headers. And you rarely see these 15-inch centerline wheels, in particular. Naturally, I want to enhance it further where possible, but I don't like too much fuss.”

  1. Sleek car, my dream for a very long time too. Unfortunately, price increases always outpaced my saving pace. The dashboard is from 1966, by the way. I would replace the Centerline wheels with Torque Thrusters, but that is of course a matter of personal preference. Enjoy the Mustang!
