The Gelderse Valley. History in old maps

Utrecht, HES Uitgevers bv, 1988.
Illustrated hardcover with dust jacket, 31,6 × 24,6cm, 263 pp.
ISBN: 906194077X

The Gelderse Vallei is the area bounded by the Utrecht ridge and the Veluwe, and includes both a part of the province of Utrecht and Gelderland. Cities such as Amersfoort, Nijkerk, Rhenen, Wageningen and many important villages are located in this region.
The author gives a historical overview of the Gelderse Vallei on the basis of old maps. On the basis of new archive research, he provides stories that are interesting and important for historians, genealogists and everyone who lives in this area.
Topics discussed include water management developments in the Valley and the emergence of the Grebbe Line, which has been of great importance for the military defense of our country since the 17 century.
For the first time, all maps of this area from the period of the 16 to the XNUM X century are also described: under 19 numbers the most important data of more than 690 maps is mentioned. Of many 1200 special cards, in many cases for the first time, a reproduction is recorded of which 60 in color. This particularly well-executed book contains as appendices 'De Gelderse Vallei in dates', 'List of maps, meaning abbreviations', 'Index of the listed maps with their map number' and 'Register of surveyors and map drawers mentioned in the map list'.
