The MOT and drought cracks

Spring has now officially begun. And we immediately received an email about the MOT rejecting tires with drought cracks in the cheeks. What does the MOT say about our wheels and tires?

All wheels must be secured, the tires must not run, but may protrude a fraction outside the wheel arches, that is max. 3 cm. For cars where that is more, there is a very simple solution for that point, while retaining toughness points: mudguard removal kits. Also good for three times the word value at Scrabble. You see them a lot on 4WDs and Mini's.

The tires must have a minimum profile of 1,6 mm. This applies to the entire width of the tread. Sloping worn means: reject if the sloping worn part has less than 1,6 mm profile. Different sizes of tires on 1 axle are not allowed. However, front / rear may differ. So left front 185 and right front 195 is not allowed. Both before 185 and both behind 195 again. Different brands of tires on the same axle are also allowed, provided the dimensions are identical. Whether it is useful because of the possible differences in the properties of the tire?

ARTICLE 5.2.27 MEMBER 8 arrangement vehicles says this:

The tires on one axle must have the same size designation, except when an emergency or spare wheel is used. Visual inspection, while the passenger car is above an inspection pit or on a lifting device. During the periodic inspection for the issue of an inspection report, an emergency or spare wheel with a different size indication is not permitted.

The same applies to rim sizes, before 15 ″ and behind 20 ″ allowed. Whether it adds something is another.
And then we come to the drought cracks in the tires. They can be an MOT rejection if the underlying cord layers are visible. But it is not to blame an attentive mechanic if he proposes to replace those tires.

Note tires: tire profile between the 2.0mm and 1,6mm, so just on the edge, are usually noted on the MOT report as a point of attention.

Oh yes: Regularly check the tire pressure, that is to preserve your tires.
