Many car enthusiasts will be familiar with Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen's famous visitor center, which functions as a museum, a brand center, and a customer experience all in one. But even the most die-hard fans may not yet be aware of the existence of a special place just outside the well-known area: the classic car depot in Vorsfelde. This depot, until recently a well-kept secret among insiders, is now open to the public and offers a fascinating look at some of the most iconic cars from the history of Volkswagen and other legendary brands.
A time capsule of automotive heritage
When entering the classic car depot you are immediately struck by the size of the collection. It's about more than just Volkswagen; the collection includes vehicles from more than sixty brands including Audi, Porsche, Škoda, but also outsiders such as Renault and Citroën. The variety of cars in the depot is impressive, with approximately three hundred automotive milestones under one roof. Here you will find everything from the first Beetle to special models such as the anniversary Golf, Passat and Scirocco, and even some foreign gems such as the Hongqi state limousine and the charming Renault 4.
These cars aren't just exhibits; they are carefully maintained and ready to hit the road. This living character of the collection makes the depot special – each car has the potential to take part in a rally or a photo shoot, adding a dynamic and functional dimension to the otherwise static experience of a museum visit.
The caretakers of the collection
A small team of specialists, based in the depot, devotes their days to maintaining and restoring these historic vehicles. This is not an easy task; each model requires specific knowledge and often parts have to be custom made or restored using traditional techniques. The team, consisting of former employees of Volkswagen and other car manufacturers, has unparalleled knowledge of the vehicles. Their dedication ensures that each vehicle is not only preserved, but in a condition as if it had just rolled off the production line.
A visit you will never forget
Although spontaneous visits are not possible, planning your visit in advance offers the opportunity to enjoy a thoroughly curated experience. The tours have been carefully curated to not only show visitors what's inside the depot, but also share in-depth stories and technical details you wouldn't hear anywhere else. It's an interactive experience that takes you on a journey through time and the engineering behind some of the most influential cars in automotive history.
The charm of the classic car depot
This depot is more than just a storage place for old cars; it is a living archive that breathes the soul of the automotive past. Every visit feels like a private audience with the greats of the automotive world, an experience that every car enthusiast should experience. The exclusivity of the tours, the richness of the collection, and the enthusiasm of the guides make every visit special.
