Launches in 1967 Alfa Romeo the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina. The new sports sedan is in many ways reminiscent of the successful Giulia, but it appears to have been built on the basis of completely different principles. The increasingly corporate zeitgeist demands more clean lines from the car designers. In Milan it leads to an exceptionally beautiful sports sedan from Bertone.

Refined waist line

De Alfa Romeo the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina has a longer wheelbase than the Giulia. The characteristic rear section is also considerably longer. Bertone, however, succeeds in giving the modified design - despite its affinity with the Giulia - a completely individual look. For example, if you look closely at the waistline, you will see a light, refined arc shape running from front to back.

The passenger compartment and various sheet metal parts also have a different shape compared to the Giulia. However, this design style gives the Berlina its own distinctive features. The interior is beautiful. Striking is the design of the four seats, the separately housed meters on the dashboard and the console sloping from the center section of the same dashboard, in which the gear lever is placed. The separate, angled, driver-oriented meters for time, coolant, fuel level and oil pressure are also placed in that beautifully shaped interior. The finishing materials used are also of unparalleled beauty.

Jewel from a power source

De Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina comes at birth with a jewel of a 1779 cc engine fed by two Weber carburettors. A version with mechanical injection is being developed for the American market. Two overhead camshafts provide extra power from the aluminum block. The engine delivers a power of 118 HP. He ensures that the new Berlina accelerates to 11 kilometers per hour in 100 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180 kilometers per hour. The maximum torque is 186 Nm at 3000 rpm and that contributes to the flexibility of this power source.

Five gears, nice chassis

The buyers of this Alfa Romeo have – and that is not always common for that time – a sporty car with standard five gears. A beautiful chassis has been screwed under the Berlina, which consists of an independent suspension with coil springs at the front. At the rear, a rigid rear axle with coil springs serves. A torsional stabilizer front and rear provide balance.

Changes in the second series

In 1969, a number of changes to the tightly cut Berlina followed. The standing pedals are replaced by hanging pedals. In addition, the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina with a modified braking system. At the front, the turn signals move from the top of the bumper to the sheet metal below the twin headlights, which retain the unequal dimensions as on Series 1. In 1971, an experimental ZF three-speed automatic transmission is also connected to the engine. This combination is technically less successful.

Distinction and sportiness

After these changes, the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina continued until 1972. Then it was definitively succeeded by the 2000 Berlina (which has a lot of similarities in appearance and was built until 1977), which also continued for some time alongside the Alfa Romeo 1750 is available. The Alfetta puts a definitive end to it Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina era. Of the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina 102.135 units run off the production line. It is still a beautiful car, from which the combination of refinement, distinction and sportiness flies. An example for every designer. Earlier. And today.

  1. Wonderful, my father had a Berlina 2000 from '76, I drove a Giulia Nuova Super 1300 at the time, both bright white in colour….

I often think back to those cars, what wonderful driving irons they both were!

    𝓡𝓾𝓵𝓮𝓼!

  2. My parents had a FIAT 125 at the time, which was also a beautiful, fast car with beautiful technology in its time. The Alfa is quite a bit more elegant. And indeed, a very nice interior.

    • My parents also had the Fiat 125.
With the caravan behind it to Normandy on dead straight roads at 120 km/h.

But the 1750 and the 2000 look more refined.
They remain somewhat bare models, but they still exude character, strength and refinement.
Not the only design shape, but a very beautiful and handsome one.
      Said the architect…

  3. I remember this car well, in the mid-70s you came across it relatively often. A beautiful car indeed, although the Alfetta was a nice replacement. Alfa then made beautiful cars such as the Sud (TI), the Sud Sprint, the Giulia of course and not to forget the GTV.

  4. Hi Jack,

That story is in Wikipedia, there are only 252 copies manufactured with an automatic.
It was an experiment. It was an unfortunate chosen partnership. great engine,
good gearbox. Unfortunately it didn't end well.
Greetings to all AMK readers (MV)

    • Hi Bastian.

That story is not from Wikipedia. The gearbox was good, the engine too, the combination was unfortunate. Gear ratios of the gearbox and the engine were no friends. And that effect probably also had an influence on consumption.

      Nice weekend.

  5. a very beautiful car, I say this because it also had everything. has for me Alfa Romeo will never be able to match this level, let alone achieve it.

  6. Have as aging Alfa enthusiast to have a ZF automatic transmission installed in my 2000 Berlina (1971, Blu Olandese) this year. I am very satisfied with my now renamed 2000A Berlina, the three-speed automatic transmission works great.
I think the comment about thin sheet metal is misplaced, perhaps that applied to the 1750, but never heard of it.

  7. 1750 a jewel? That proved to be because it excelled in rarity! Kennis has a '68 Spider 1750 for which there is no ball. Nevertheless, he has been driving the beautiful thing since 84, of which his first 10 years with an oil-smoking block. It does make a difference because the oil leakage has a preservative effect

  8. I totally agree with Peter and Jack, would love to hear how good or bad that vending machine has been. And yes, the refined lines of the Giulia Super can't compete with the Berlina with Fiat/Lada lines.

    • @Peter: Thin sheet metal? It's just regular thickness used all over the car industry.
And my '72 Berlina is still alive DESPITE the fact that there is almost no sheet metal left…
And about the lines: At the introduction, this was a very modern variant of the Giulia styling. You may find it boring, but in the zeitgeist it was a very modern and progressive coach. For the man with taste and the profession that went with it.
The longer wheelbase compared to the Giulia makes it a quieter and more comfortable travel car.

  9. Where does the story come from that the combination with the automatic gearbox is technically less successful?
Have you driven a 1750 Automatic?
    Jacks

    • Dear Jack.

      Thank you for your response.

The gearbox ratios and the 1750 cc engine were -as I understand- not well matched, perhaps a four or five-speed automatic (not common at the time) would have suited the powerful and torque-rich engine. With the 1750 Berlina, the automatic transmission was also experimental, and it was difficult to properly adjust the kickdown. What I (also from the world) have understood is that with the 2000 Berlina in combination with an automatic transmission, things were really better for each other.

      Nice weekend.
