Alfa Romeo produced beautiful cars in its illustrious history. One of those special cars is the Alfa Romeo Giulia which succeeded the Giulietta in the early sixties. This characteristic Italian would remain in production until 1978 and be released in numerous variants. The TI Super is the most sought after version of the still enchanting Giulia.

The Giulia: the sports sedan in different car generations

At the end of the 1290s, the first ideas about replacing the then Giulietta surfaced. The Giulietta was with 1900 cc the smaller version of the now more than ten years old XNUMX.

On June 27, 1962, the Giulia TI was presented at the Monza circuit. The Giulia looked less like the Giulietta than expected and was characterized by elegance with angular and straight lines. The design came - just as with the Giulietta - from Orazio Satta Puliga. The Giulia debuted as 1600 TI and was powered by an engine that produced 92 HP and a top speed of 166 kilometers per hour. In 1962 these were impressive values.

Also striking was the low air resistance, which the still angular Alfa developed. This Giulia kicked off the career that lasted until 1978. The sports sedan coexisted with several car generations. It was also the basis for many Alfa Romeo models. The Sprint and Spider are two of those icons that found their basis in the Giulia.

The sedan itself was also produced in many variants up to 1978. The TI and Super models of the first generation are especially known and loved. They were available with various 1.300 and 1.600 engines. The second generation - the Nuova Super delivered from 1972 - was less popular because of various body modifications that were applied in line with the more businesslike seventies. The later built Diesel was rare. The most special version was the Giulia TI Super. It was produced as a homologation car in 1963 and 1964 and is still the most sought after Giulia.

TI Super: Special and rare version

A very special version was the TI Super. This was produced in total 501 times and only offered to private drivers. It was half the price of the "normal" 1600 TI. The TI Super had a modified 1600 engine. Two double horizontal Weber carburettors provided a power of 112 HP and a top speed of 184 kilometers per hour, based on standard specifications.

Furthermore, this Giulia was the first to be equipped with disc brakes. The seat was also different from the standard version. Two large racing fairings with adapted seat belts had to keep the driver and co-driver better in the saddle.

The instruments were also adjusted. It was equipped with several meters - not included in the standard Giulia. A clock with clustered gauges (water and oil temperature gauge, fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge), a rev counter and a speedometer adorned the nose of the lucky driver, who overlooked a beautiful three-spoke steering wheel. Finally, the car was lighter than the standard Giulia. On the outside of the TI Super, recognizable by the Quadrifoglio badges on the front fenders and the “grilled spotlight units”.

Rally successes

The TI Super was regularly successful in rallies. Arnaldo Cavallari, for example, won the Campionatio Italiano Rally in 1964. The drivers Tecilia and Milior took second place in the 15th Rally of Sweden. It also took place in 1964.

Rare, sought after and well priced

The Giulia TI Super is rare, and therefore much sought after. Well-maintained copies are worth between $ 26.800 and $ 36.200, according to Classic Analytics. In practice, however, there are cases where amounts have been paid for this unique Giulia variant that are far above the stated market value.

  1. Ruud, Jeroen and Bart; totally agree with you! And Idk, racing has now become vd “upperclass”, and also for example at Zolder, (B.), much too expensive for normal people. Fortunately I have that time of, the little one Alfa club, the small Spiderclub, and the 10 euro entrance. ( incl. classic car P )….

  2. No vaccine for me Alfavirus!
After also div. Alfamodels, now my 2nd Giulietta QV and recently added an original Giulia Nuova from 74.
No icon as above, but every day a party to drive and look at.

  3. This giulia makes me sad; It's one of the few alfa's that I didn't own. I'm on my eighth alfa always with a lot of driving pleasure (and sometimes bizarre defects!) I am 84 years old and look back with pleasure: (not in the right order): alfa south, alfa 33, alfatta (sedan), alfa 75, alfa 156, alfa 166, mito, giulietta (2016) currently: beautiful car during many trips to Switzerland (800 km traveled in one without problems and a lot of fun on babysitting….

  4. It couldn't be more Italian. Slender, slim, sexy, fast and useful. And thought out and exciting from the largest to the smallest detail. In that sense, it is strange that a “fat German” is setting the standard these days. Because if you have the Alfa Compare Giulia with the current - so-called - sporty sedan, something has gone wrong somewhere in terms of automotive obesity (I think).

    • Fortunately, the current Giulia does not harm its reputation in that regard: one of the finest cars to steer in its class ... and that partly due to the relatively low weight.

  5. There has also been raced with it for a number of seasons at Zandvoort. The squadra bianca class!
Great, until the “big money” joined in.
