AMK Classic Car Day a resounding success once again

Closing date July issue -> May 19

With around 300 cars and an estimated 2500 visitors, the AMK can Old-timer day It can be called a success without exaggeration. Anyone who walked onto the grounds on March 28 saw it immediately: this was no run-of-the-mill gathering with just a row of gleaming classics, but a lively day full of meeting new people, recognizing new faces, and above all, lots of automotive fun.

Early in the morning, plenty of beautiful things were on display. The weather started somewhat hesitantly, with wet pavement and grey skies, but that very fact gave the first few hours an almost typically Dutch feel. Classic cars on a damp square, owners with their hands in their pockets, visitors simply making their rounds anywayβ€”it’s all part of the experience. Later, the skies cleared and the event took on exactly the atmosphere that enthusiasts crave: fresh air, a spring sun, and people everywhere lingering over details, stories, and open hoods.

A bit of everything, and that's exactly why it's so fun

What makes the AMK Oldtimer Day extra enjoyable is that the offerings don't fit into a single category. No strictly defined brand club, no uniform field of participants, but rather a broad palette of cars and two-wheelers. There were neat sedans from the sixties and seventies, quite a few youngtimers, a handful of sporty models, American cars, motorcycles, a camper, and even a few utility vehicles that attracted at least as much attention as the more polished passenger cars.

That variety is, of course, the charm of a day like this. One person stops at a sleek German sedan, another at a somewhat weathered but oh-so-likable French classic. A little further on, a red convertible drew plenty of attention, while a striking yellow Plymouth Deluxe two-door sedan with a chopped roof and a number of neat coupes and GTs clearly found their audience as well. It is not just rarity that counts, but above all the story a car carries with it.

Throughout the day, there was also a constant coming and going of participants who did not necessarily have to stay until the event was over. That was an advantage around midday, when finding a spot in the large car park behind roadside restaurant De Kar in Klarenbeek was a challenge. But unfortunately, people also wanted to go home on time, which elicited a somewhat disillusioned reaction from a classic car enthusiast who came to watch with his grandson around half past three.

Not only look, but also talk

You see people in conversation. And actually, that is at least as important. The AMK Oldtimer Day is not just about looking, but also about exchanging. About restorations, about parts, about previous cars, about holidays from the past, and about that one model someone has β€œalways wanted to do something with.” Enthusiasts find each other and talk about their classics, even though they had never seen each other before.

That is precisely what makes a day like this more than just a show. You see visitors pointing out details, owners offering explanations, hoods opening, and small groups forming around a dashboard, engine bay, or body detail. That is the classic car world at its best: approachable, curious, and unpretentious.

From neat classic to honest everyday car

Another strong point was the variety in presentation. Not every car needs to be in concours condition to make an impression. In fact, it was precisely the mix of perfectly maintained examples and honestly used classics that gave the grounds character. Some cars looked sleek and shiny, while others wore their signs of wear with pride. And let's be honest: at AMK, we quite like that. A classic car is allowed to show that it has a life behind it.

That also applied to the composition of the field. Alongside the more obvious crowd favorites, there were cars that made you look just a little longer. Because they were rare, because they transported you back in time, or simply because they were once commonplace and now suddenly turn out to be special. It is precisely these kinds of cars that make an event like this interesting. Not only the exclusive stuff, but also the models that used to dominate the street scene deserve their place in the spotlight.

Successful edition

All in all, this AMK Classic Car Day was an edition to look back on with pleasure. The combination of approximately 300 cars, about 2500 visitors, a varied program, and a pleasant atmosphere made for a day that did exactly what it was supposed to do: bring enthusiasts together.

And perhaps that is the most important thing of all. Amidst all the sheet metal, chrome, rubber, and gasoline, what stuck with me most was how much fun people take doing this together. Not because they have to, but because it is enjoyable. Because cars evoke memories. Because technology continues to fascinate. And because a beautiful classic car in a square full of like-minded people still has something special about it.

The AMK Classic Car Day showed once again that the hobby is alive and kicking.

The next edition is scheduled for the autumn again. Make sure you are there (again).

  1. This year I actually managed to come with my modified Dodge W/D series πŸ˜‰, indeed a nice, relaxed event and the weather actually turned out to be very nice for a few hours. A lovely drive from Friesland!

  2. It was barely 10Β°. You can't expect many motorcycles to turn up then. At best, a few on a trailer or in a van. But riding... that is reserved only for the real 'die-hards'. All those 60+ motorcycle enthusiasts just can't handle the cold!

  3. It was once again very pleasant and informal. Nice encounters and equally nice conversations. For the sake of balance, a few more motorcycles would be welcome; it is called that for a reason. Auto Motor KlassiekπŸ˜‰
