Of course he was almost 38 years old. And it was a very 'bare' Polo

But he was only from the second owner who had acquired the Volkswagen from a legacy. Oh yeah. There was only 43.000 kilometers on the clock. And the still visible metallic Volkswagen also had a complete maintenance history. The car was put on sale for 500 euros. As an asking price. And nobody responded.

Within the circle of acquaintances, the Polo was then literally offered for free

There was no interest. A student friend with public transportation stress explained that he really did not want to be seen in such a cart. Only when a newly divorced lady needed immediate transport, the VW got a boss again. Six months later, the lady was dating again. And it turned out to be too much trouble to do something with Polootje. The crispy car went to the scrapyard.

An 1983 member Audi 100 1900 with two damaged doors turned out to be worth only 300 euros despite a relative rarity for a young Achterhoeker who bought him to go cross. But when we look back at that Polo, that was a very nice car around 1980. And that many great classics now have no drop in commercial value? That's just a fantastic message in times when 'everyone' knows that classic car prices have gone through the roof.

The Polo from 1079 was presented three years before

And the press at the time thought it was already a poorly equipped car. And he was then also quite the prize. Under the hood was the engine that was derived from that of the then Audi 50, and that block had been reduced to 1.093 cc by mounting a different crankshaft from 895 cc. That was enough for the empty but 685 kilos light VW (which incidentally had a serious payload of 415 kilos).

Smooth and economical

With that small four-cylinder, such an entry-level Polo was smooth and efficient. At a time when petrol madness has once again reached a pinnacle with the new fuel indications - where euro 95 can now actually contain 10 reprehensible percentages of alcohol - an average consumption of 1 at almost 13 is pleasant. The fact that the P: olo had a hand choke was also sometimes a problem in its time - let's keep it gender neutral - for some drivers with a limited technical sense. The further transmission also worked fine.

The handling of such a small VW was also fine

And with disks in front and drums behind, stopping was no problem either. With the compact thing with its small engine it was even possible to drive surprisingly smoothly and actively. And it remained pleasantly quiet in the interior. All in all, there was not much to fault on a Polo. Only the tension between price and equipment, that was a thing. Because a slightly nicely dressed Polo was about as expensive as a Golf in basic version. Well, it didn't hang through its axes of accessories either.

In short: a Polo is a fun, affordable classic

It is now no longer firmly priced. Polootjes now offered are usually much less cultivated, embellished and encrypted than Golfjes. The first series ran until 1979, then the Polos received their first facelift. And grab a fall Ardennes Ardennes weekend with a Polo? That is not a punishment at all.

  1. Too bad about the Audi 100. Strong, durable cars. However, if you want to get it nice and good, you can look for parts. To my knowledge, those moldings are very expensive and you can see that you can repair the rest of the damage a bit properly. These Audis are not worth as much as a Mercedes or BMW from that period.
