Everyone always talks about a barn find. But this motorcycle has been in a living room for 35 years? What does that say about the living quality of the owner? Come, there are other sites about that.

That is not that easy

It is too much dreamed or asked to start such a clean sleeper and drive away on it. As far as the looks are concerned, you can use a duster over it. But for the rest you have to realize very well why such a machine is only interesting for a limited audience and hardly 'for the trade': there is a lot of work to do. So many 'man hours' that the investment in it for a trader almost never outweighs the market value.

And there are not so many more of the kind of hobbyists who are happy to take on such a job. However, such a find can be a hit for the right buyer.

What if you adopted such a barn find?

Firstly, the question is whether the block is 'loose'. Under unfavorable conditions, cylinders can get stuck in their bores in your barn find. If you are unlucky, it is due to corrosion. Then the cylinder bores must go to at least the first oversize, new pistons and a set of cylinder and cylinder head gaskets must be added. Cash desk!

If the clutch does not come off your barn find, then that is not a problem for the time being. Just put the clutch lever under tension for a few days first with some serious elastics or a tie wrap. This problem usually resolves itself during - or just after - starting. The clutch plates stick together.

Check the gas filters and taps. There is a good chance that the carburetors are contaminated or corroded internally. Fortunately nowadays almost everyone has an acquaintance with an ultrasonic bath purchased at the ALDI or Action. Check the floats for leaks. Invest in a carburetor revision kit. Cash desk!

The air filters are located behind the carburetors. Replace it. Cash desk!

In any case, invest in new spark plugs and check the ignition if that is just another ignition with contact points.

Of course the battery is dead too. Cash desk!

See with fresh Volts on board if all the electrical things are doing. Failures in this phase are often due to transition resistances. They can occur in all plug connections. In that process, 'mass errors' are often also a cause of problems. We were talking about mass errors recently.

Inner and outer tires, no matter how beautiful the profile of the outer tires is? They must be refreshed. Rubber ages, hardens. Old tires are really dangerous. Cash desk!

Always replace the brake fluid and the brake hoses of your abrasive find. Brake hoses are officially wearing parts. They usually last between the 5 and 7 years. The inner lining can then be released, so that the brake is no longer released. Use the prescribed brake fluid. Cash desk!

Cables such as those for coupling and gas often run rough after a long time. You can lubricate them. That is a bit of a time-consuming job, but it costs little. If you go for sure you have to rely on the fact that an original set of replacement cables can seriously cost money. Cash desk!

Often original cables are no longer available. At Visser-Tijhof they make exact replicas based on the original example. That is beautiful again.

It is convenient to give all oils time to leave the building. If an oil filter is present, it must in any case be cleaned, but if it is a cartridge filter, it must be replaced. Bring all the oil to the right level and make a round of about 25 kilometers to get the case right.

Then drain the oil again. Clean the filter again if it is a mesh filter. Or replace the filter again if it is a cartridge filter. Don't forget to refit the oil drain plugs and to provide the whole with fresh juices.

And then enjoy riding a well-checked, reborn classic motorcycle, and even more because it was a shed find!

More tips? They are welcome!

  1. Delicious, such toys IN your house and then in your living room!
Generally it seems less easy to me if you are not single.

My toy is not IN the house, but it does not make much difference. The garage is an integral part of our house and when I open a door in the kitchen, I am immediately in the (heated) garage and can enjoy my duckling. Yes, a much appreciated luxury, since I started 25 years ago with vintage cars as a daily driver, who were outside day and night.

By the way, I wonder if the single existence of the man is the reason or the result of the inflatable or other kind of doll on the first photo.

  2. It was 1980. In the garage my father's moped was waiting to be ridden again after 12 years. The Honda C310 had not taken a revolution in all these years. So gasoline in it and… nothing. The ignition turned out to be great. The tank and carburettor turned out to be a flop. The tank should rust and rinse. The carburettor was completely stuck due to gummed gasoline. Thinner became my great friend. Tank and 'gas factory' in order again, but not running. Except for a bang from the exhaust, no sign of life. What now? Compression,…. which compression? So just take the valve cover off. Ah! The exhaust valve hung open. After three light taps with a small hammer, she immediately clicked shut and worked again. Then one more kick on the pedal and…. he came to life! However, the crankshaft bearings turned out. They were replaced. But the piglet was also rusted to pieces. I had the crankshaft pressed with a new set of tap, connecting rod and roller bearing. Assemble and…. mmmm 🙂 to enjoy. He then served another 45.000 km of loyal service and when asked, he still does. And whisper quiet too. Built in 1965 and still the first paint. Everything with a consumption of 1:65 Just go on!

  3. Fat. After a long time, fat becomes crackling and dries out.
What remains is a hard cake that does not spread and that dogs no longer eat.
Steering head and rear bridge go rough, wheel bearings grind ..
If you do fit new tires… immediately invest in new wheel bearings or clean them and provide them with new grease.
