The Princess
Thus, between 1964-1974, the 1800-2200 models from Austin, Morris, and Wolseley were called "Landcrabs."
The name of the name was inspired by their unusual width, the positionerining of the wheels at the extreme corners and by the massive, centrally located passenger compartment.
Designed by Sir Alec Issogonis, the cars were amply equipped with the genes that made the Mini an icon. They were the first luxury passenger cars with front-wheel drive within the UK and had to compete with conventional cars such as Fords and Vauxhalls.
The public thought the 'Landcrabs' a bit weird ...
British Leyland went through the matter and opted for trendy and wedge-shaped. A dynamic space ace styling for good civilian fathers. Those spectacular wind-splitting lines were drawn by Harris Man, who also did the Allegro and TR 7.
To keep the matter manageable, the newcomer as 'Princess' became the replacement for the brands Austin, Morris and Wolseley. The fifth door came in 1982 and the Princess became an Austin again.

There was only one drawback: the design that screamed at a third - or fifth - door, but a normal boot lid. . In 1982 the fifth door came and the Princess also became an Austin by the way .. DeHydragas suspension provided a lot of comfort with short shocks, but with some people on long journeys for seasickness.
The beautifully lined Princess was a fantastic car that only recently got its fifth door late and was largely the victim of the quality problems at BL caused by strikes.
