With temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius it may be the last thing you would expect, but the province of Gelderland sprinkled salt on various provincial roads last week.
That is the explanation of the white stuff on roundabouts and on verges.
Sprinkle salt in a heat wave? Hell yes!
Spreading occurred on the N345 between Apeldoorn and Zutphen, the N224 between Arnhem and Ede, the N334 at Apeldoorn, N844 at Malden and N302 at Kootwijk.
These provincial roads have recently been given a new layer of asphalt.
A new binder has been used and this is released again at extremely high temperatures. Puddles of 'black water' then arise on the road.
"You can call it sweat stains in the asphalt," said a spokesperson for the province. Drivers who see such a place should drive a little more calmly and be alert.
There is a solution for this problem and that is salt. By using road salt and brine, the wet and soft spots become less fluid and sticky.
The scattering actions resulted in short traffic jams on the provincial roads according to the Traffic Information Service.
In the meantime there have been a few big showers. So the chance of summer brine damage to your classic remains limited.
