The BMW CSL restoration report is in the February issue of AMK. And the owner of that elegant brute, who has the best motor oil flowing through his veins.
Anorex BMWs
In the racing of their time, the Alpina tuned BMWs were too heavy. And not just a little bit too. Jochen Neerpasch, head motorsport of Ford Germany, was hired to let the BMW's lose weight. He did it hard and without limitations. And with the use of plastic windows and bumpers, BMW Motorsport was born.
And of all that beauty, a whole bunch had to be built for homologation purposes. And because exclusive things are not made for Otto Normalverbraucher or Jan Modaal, the pricing was very rigid. For the price of a BMW CSL in full combat gear with the large rear spoiler, you had two Jaguar V12 and a very thick mid-sized car from the more expensive segment.
The BMW CSL from Robbert Willems came from Italy as a 'fluke'. The restoration was challenging. There are considerably fewer items for sale for the BMW CSL than for a beetle. And if you find something, the prices are on a very different level than with a beetle. Fortunately, in the meantime, BMW has gained an eye for its own history and the Mobile Tradition from BMW delivers the items that are so hard to find. And then it is always handy to have an acquaintance that can work with an 3D printer.
The whole, extensive, restoration story is, as said, in the February issue of AMK. And if a trip to the kiosk or the local magazines and tobacco distributor is too much for you in this weather?
