Purchasing classics there

We were talking about that recently. Buying at auctions carries a certain risk. Classics - no matter how beautiful they are - usually fall under a coulance arrangement at most. The risks for classic enthusiasts apply in the purchase area between € 4.00 and € 4.000.000. On top of that it goes between highly paid lawyers.

On the other hand: we recently reported about a neat Altootje for € 250

The fact that afterwards for tens of euros in parts were invested in it did not hurt the happy buyer. But that Altootje was also viewed before the purchase. And a test drive could be made. And that is usually not possible at auctions.

Of course we all try to pay attention to the money

Whether that is about tens - or thousands of euros. This has triggered a very strange - and dangerous - trend. The Netherlands has the reputation of being 'cheap' in the classic field abroad. That is why you often see foreign visitors on viewing days of companies or auction houses. The Netherlands is therefore a gateway to the European market. And then we have the Internet.

Because Europeans, and Dutch, who are price-conscious, look further and further

South America has been discovered as a region where classics can be found at the best prices. When it comes to countries of the former Eastern bloc, everyone knows that everything is still there, that hourly wages are minimal, but that traditional craftsmanship is still the norm of the day. In those countries, smart people have discovered that the local reputation is a 'USP, a Unique Selling Point'.

Deception is lurking

The price of a Brazilian Sambabus must therefore be low and in Brazil there is no sprinkling of brine. A Polish restoration must have been done well in the old-fashioned way because in Poland it is full of cheap craftsmen. Both those assumptions can be true. At least: if the provider is integer. But they are not all of them. From South America and the entire former Eastern bloc, we are seen by many clever people as fools who cannot afford their wealth. There are people who see their chances there.

Ordinary: purchased on the pictures

That there are dreaming fools among us may not be such a friendly one, but it is a correct conclusion. Because buying a car in South America from here on just a bunch of photos on the Internet? Not a good plan! Do you want to work with a Polish or Czech restoration company as a private individual after just mail contact? Not such a good plan either. We've heard too many stories to dare to say that.

With real, local contacts it becomes a completely different story

That is why established classic traders have their 'males' in all those countries that have the reputation that there is still a lot to be found. And through that process the gems are then found or the - guided and controlled 'cheap' restoration is still a success. If such a classic is 'here', then it has clearly become more expensive than it was at the source. But quite a bit of work has been put into it. And then we are not even talking about the margin that the Dutch trader must use to make his business exist. But the classic in question is here. And can be seen.

Because - no matter how much we trust in humanity: We do not buy classics that we have not seen, felt and smelled. And if you are looking for the classic of your dreams, but don't have much 'combat experience', then we strongly recommend that you don't just view the classic of your dreams. Go hunting with someone who has at least good technical knowledge. Become a member of a brand or type club. Have a purchase inspection carried out.

Look for risk limitation 'in the corner of specialist providers

But at least keep visiting the viewing days of auctions. That is extremely instructive and pleasant. And maybe you will find the classic of your dreams for the price you always hoped for.

Because outdoor opportunities and happiness exist and the reputable auction houses attach to their reputation. And they are approachable here if there really is something.

Experience has in any case taught a person that this was not the case with his supplier in Sao Paolo.
