De Telegraaf conducted a poll last Friday under the heading “What you say”. Readers responded to the statement of the day in which the recital was raised to remove environmental zones in major cities. No less than 85% of the respondents see no benefit in these measures. "Mopeds and scooters in the inner cities cause much more pollution."

A small 8.000 participants responded to the statement of the day. The majority of respondents do not think that cars make a greater contribution to poor air quality than other polluters. All symbolic. In Rotterdam and Amsterdam, cruise boats dock, which have more emissions in one hour than the entire traffic combined. ”An advocate of environmental zones spoke out for banning both polluting cars and coal-fired power stations and polluting industry.

P and R facilities

Proponents of the environmental zone cited arguments that these zones are good for the living environment and health. Remarkable was also the suggestion that the inner cities should be kept car-free. “P and R facilities must be used much more. In this way you give visitors the opportunity to come to the city center with clean transport. ”

No difference

Remarkably, the Rotterdam Classics Foundation in an interview with Auto Motor Klassiek has already indicated that this is one of the options for putting an end to the environmental zone discussion. Improved infrastructure for traffic flow was also mentioned. And through these columns it is also regularly indicated that with good traffic circulation and car-free inner cities nothing is wrong. But then - and the Foundation agrees - one vehicle should not and the other should not be banned.

Environmental zones do not contribute

It has now become clear that environmental zones do not contribute to an improved living environment. In fact, since the judge once again allowed the petrol cars that were banned in the environmental zone of Rotterdam, the emission of harmful substances has even been reduced. And this week we published an old German study, which showed that blocking diesels leads to higher emissions of nitrogen dioxide.

Most respondents also resist electric car stimulation

The Telegraaf study, by the way, made it even clearer. 38% of respondents favors incentive measures for electric cars, 53% is against, and 9% has no opinion. That is less clear language than the 85% that indicates that they see nothing in an environmental zone. And another signal that the government must intervene at a national level and consider taking a line through these zones.
