At the classic car show in Leek, Henk Verkerk shared with us the story behind this special rally version of the 2CV, it is a Deuggy. Citroën has many special bodies based on the popular Duck, but this version with a plastic body is very special.
The builder of the rally package is ultimately in the name of Filip van Gool (Van Gool Service, VGS) from Baarle-Hertog in Belgium. A company that can maintain the beloved 2CV, in whatever form, with contemporary techniques. The appealing version is now rally-ready and fully prepared: simply a class apart.
Small business with great passion
Henk's daily work can be broadly described as: "Everything in the field of automobiles of yesteryear." He likes to work on classics and oldtimers, where they can be brought back to new technical condition. But restorations can also be carried out, from partial restorations to complete restorations, all tailored to the wishes of the customer.
Motivation
Henk: “My work has always been my passion. The urge for adventure, you can enrich every experience, and it is always a challenge to realize the wishes of the customers.”
The urge for adventure
We put the spotlight on the Deuggy (as this rally cannon is called). With this car you enter the world of rally driving. The car caused a sensation at the fair, was extensively viewed and discussed. Due to its exclusivity it was the most special car, of which five copies are still known. But perhaps a stray package could still turn up.
The history
The construction of the plastic superstructure was developed in France specifically for rallying with the aim of building a series to meet the requirements for participation. However, the numbers were not achieved, after which the remaining packages were sold. One certainly ended up in Belgium, and the only one in the Netherlands is now at Verkerk Classics. (Talk about exclusivity!)
The technique described
The engine is newly built from new old stock (652 cc) and equipped with Weber carburetors. The extra reinforced chassis comes from the manufacturer Wheels from England. The gearbox has been modified with a limited slip differential and modified transmission ratios. In addition, the wishbones and the steering gear have been reinforced. The windows are equipped with Lexan to make the car lighter. A Citroën-connoisseur will immediately see that the rims come from an Ami Super.
All these adjustments make the Deuggy optimally suited for participation in rallies. Even after that, Verkerk Classics (Wolvega) made additional adjustments, whereby the execution and technical finish already place the Deuggy in the group of the front runners!
