The first column I am allowed to write as an oil expert for Auto Motor Klassiek!
More than two weeks ago we organized together with De karOliehandel.nl en Auto Motor Klassiek the first AMK Oldtimer DayDespite code yellow, wind and rain, we can be very satisfied.
Enthusiasts met, showed each other pride, exchanged knowledge and reminisced, just as we intended.

The classic car season is over – time to winterize your classic car

The autumn weather makes one thing clear: it classic car season has come to an end. A shame for some, but the beginning of a real adventure for others: tinkering or restoring.
Nice and warm in the barn, with the smell of oil and steel.

There are two kinds of enthusiasts:

  1. Those who park their classic car until spring.
  2. And those who understand that standstill becomes rust if you let oil and gasoline age.

Because oil and fuel are the lifeblood of every classic. When they get old, things go wrong.

Changing engine oil for winter storage

After a summer full of rides and rallies, engine oil contains more dirt than you think: condensation, fuel residues and metal particles.
If you leave it like that for months, you will get rust from within Free rein. Old oil seems good, but it ruins your engine.

So, before your classic car goes under the rug, first have a take a warm ride, then fresh oil in it.
Warm, so that all residue is removed. New, so that your engine starts smoothly in the spring.
This is how you keep the engine of your classic car clean and reliable.

Fuel and ethanol – the underestimated culprit

The fuel is often the cause of problems after winter storage. Gasoline evaporates, ages and attracts moisture – especially E10 gasoline with ethanol is bad news for old tanks and carburetors.

Tip 1: always fill up E5-petrol.
Tip 2: Fill the tank completely. A half-empty tank causes condensation, rust, and air bubbles.
Tip 3: Use a fuel protector as Millers TankSafeThis forms a protective layer against moisture and oxygen.

At Oliehandel.nl you will also find Classic gasoline (as Ecomaxx), ideal for long periods of downtime.

Classic rituals for winter

Put a cloth in the exhaust and air intake, but stick a note on the steering wheel so as not to forget it.
It sounds old-fashioned, but there is something soothing about these kinds of actions.
A man, a car, an oil can, and silence in the shed. The smell of warm oil, the clicking of metal cooling.

It's not work, it's respect for the machine.
Never tried it? Give it a try. Then enjoy a cup of coffee, beer, or drink—it's good for both people and machines.

Spring fun starts in winter

A classic that will go into winter well, starts better, sounds better and smells better in the spring.
And admit it: there's nothing more beautiful than the smell of fresh oil and old gasoline on a sunny spring day.

Advice on oil and maintenance

This was my first blog for Auto Motor Klassiek. Do you have questions about oil, engine maintenance or fuel? Feel free to email us at info@oliehandel.nlWe are happy to give you personal advice.

💡 Last tip:
Connect your battery to a trickle charger. It's a small effort, but a real pleasure in the spring.

With kind regards,

  1. It really doesn't take much effort to put the classic away with fresh oil/
If the vehicle is almost due for maintenance, it is better to do this before storing it.
It's so nice to rediscover your classic car afterward and be able to drive away immediately without any problems. It's almost the same feeling as buying a new car.
If your classic car has been in storage for more than a year, it is also advisable to inject a little oil through the spark plugs so that the cylinder walls are wet.
I have a classic car that hasn't been moved for 3 years, just pump up the tires, put a little gasoline in the carburetor and then it's straight away start and go.
