demolition threatens
Not British, the demolition of cultural heritage
There has been a great deal of turmoil in the British classic world now that project developers, in collaboration with the city council of the Scottish city of Glasgow, have unveiled plans to demolish a historic garage. Botanic Gardens Garage on the local Vinicombe Street, a beautiful building in Art Deco style, opened its doors in 1906.

Automotive owners were able to park their cart there - safely. The building designed by David Wylie was the first multi-storey car warehouse in the world. Until today, the indoor gas pumps are still present. They are still working, but are no longer operational. The building is at the top of the monument list in Great Britain and is the oldest existing building of its kind. Opponents have fought legally for four years to preserve this building, but - as it stands now - have lost the battle against big money. The project developers want to demolish the majority of the building in order to realize new store locations. The only hope that people still have now is that Historic Scotland can throw a spanner in the works.
