This car insurance best suits the age of your car
In the Netherlands, every car owner is required to have at least third-party liability insurance, but you can also opt for more comprehensive coverage. The best insurance policy for you depends on factors such as the value and age of your car. Therefore, it's wise to regularly check whether your current insurance is still the best choice. The tips below will help you: Compare car insurance and find the best deal that suits your car.
0 to 5 years old
Relatively new cars are often still worth a lot of money. So, if your car is less than five years old, comprehensive car insurance is generally the best choice. This insurance, also called third-party liability (WA+) fully comprehensive, covers almost all types of damage, even if you accidentally caused it yourself. This makes it the most comprehensive car insurance policy.
For most cars, this is the best insurance for up to five years, but in the more expensive segments it is often recommended to keep this type of car insurance for a little longer.
6 to 10 years old
As your car ages, its current value decreases. It might be wise to choose less comprehensive coverage with a lower premium. Third-party liability insurance (WA+) is often recommended for cars between 6 and 10 years old. This is also called "limited coverage." This type of insurance provides coverage for damage caused by fire, extreme weather conditions, or burglary, for example. Some forms of vandalism are also covered by WA+.
Older than 10 years
Is your car older than 10 years? It's often depreciated further, especially if the mileage has increased significantly. It might be worth considering switching from a more comprehensive insurance policy to third-party liability insurance. This is a basic insurance policy with minimal coverage that's mandatory in the Netherlands.
Patrick Bottenheft, car insurance expert at Independer, recommends always critically reviewing your car insurance: "You want comprehensive coverage for a brand new car, but for a car older than 10 years, that might not be necessary. Carefully consider whether the premium outweighs the compensation you receive. Lower coverage means a lower premium." Generally speaking, if your car is worth less than €7.500, third-party liability insurance likely offers the best balance between coverage and cost. You'll pay a lower monthly premium, but you'll also have less coverage than with third-party liability+ or comprehensive insurance. This is because you're only insured for damage you cause to others. Your own car isn't covered by this insurance.
Determine current value
Besides the age of your car, other factors naturally play a role in its value. And that value is the most important indicator for choosing the most suitable car insurance. Are you reconsidering your insurance? Then see if you can find your car's current market value. There are handy tools available online for this.
Oldtimer insurance
Do you own a classic car that you can call a modern classic or vintage car? Then your car might be worth more than a "regular" old car. There are special modern classic and vintage car insurance policies specifically for these types of vehicles.
This type of specialized insurance is usually tailored to specific issues related to modern or classic cars. However, it often comes with additional terms and conditions, such as a maximum annual mileage limit. Just like with regular car insurance, classic car insurance offers options including third-party liability (WA), third-party liability plus (WA+), and comprehensive coverage.
