We recently drove behind a Golf VII. And we were surprised. At home we checked the books once. That explained a lot. Products evolve. And the 'product' Golf had also done that while we were not paying attention.
In the KNAC car yearbook from 1975, the Golf appeared as an 4-5 person, two-door coach.
The dimensions of the car were in L x W x H: 370 cm x 161 cm x 141 cm. The Golf weighed 750 kilos.
The battleship we drove behind was therefore a wave of the last generation.
The dimensions are: 426 × 145 × 179 cm.
And the new Golf weighs 1354 kilos
You can also see the unbridled growth phenomenon when a full sized Yank Tank swims in traffic: Compared to current SUVs and top models from BMW and Mercedes, such a chunk of steel is where we and our fathers thought a car just wasn't bigger and more impressive could not be very impressive anymore. At least not because of its size.
It doesn't matter: According to the Pure Laws for Classics that the Real Die Hards live by. only the Golf 1s are of historical importance, no matter how much better or bigger his successors became. And no matter how desirable, fun or much better they are.
