Groningen: Pendulum routes and forgotten dreams

Purchasing classics there

Of course, traveling is most real with a Michelin card on the knees of the co-driver M / F. But I think we are all used to the blessings of 'navigation'. For our classics, the TomToms, the and the (Belgian) Tripy navigation systems are very useful. Especially when, as with the TomTom rider on one of the editorial two-wheelers, 'the winding routes' is chosen.

A world opens up for you

The calculation work behind this is incomprehensible to normal users, but the result is phenomenal. Last weekend we were on our way to Usquert, above Groningen. At Assen we put the TomTom on winding routes, and then a whole new world opened up for us. Everything down to what the Michelink cards are the 'white roads' was apparently extremely compact in the software. And because you hardly have the chance of a passenger reading a Michelin card next to you on a classic motorcycle, the route went dancing and without interruption on fantastic nice roads through sixties of landscapes. About roads that you had never taken on your sense of direction or good luck.

Out together, home together

Funny was that the Garmin is the (classic) trailer apparently ran on other software. We regularly lost sight of each other. But once in Usquert we decided to do a weekend of winding roads a little further in the spring in Groningen, and perhaps Friesland. Because with the GPS on winding routes you not only make a time journey, you also see that the Netherlands is full of classics. Classics that are usually included in the 'Verkeerd afgelopen'can, but still. Apparently having a lot of space is a thing that keeps people from throwing away everything that is unnecessary.

Just go and see for yourself

In order not to encroach on the privacy of the owners of all that past glory, we do not want to list places and addresses. But at three of the stops we made, we were very friendly. It is clear that the whole approach has to be done calmly and somewhat modestly. Because as one of our conversation partners freely translated: “I once had a bunch of those 'vregge' (cheeky) Westerners in the yard. I sent the dog to that ”. This shows that Groningers and French speakers share the aversion to the Randstad residents who, to their taste, who act too directly.

Never be rushed or emphatic. Be curious

But in a calm, pleasant conversation you will find each other without problems. There is a local interest in 'old stuff', but the involvement in the past glory in the yard is often limited. The finds are usually suitable as donors at most. But oh well ... The trouble. The hassle. It is not in the way.

We discovered a completely different Groningen in two days and ended up at Resort Landgoed Westerlee for our overnight stay. A great hotel-restaurant accommodation in a converted farmhouse from around 1900. From our room window we saw another classic further on. Zooming in with the camera taught that it was an Opel Rekord. A car that is not forgotten, but apparently being restored.

And the director of Resort Landgoed Westerlee has a DS. Classic enthusiasts are therefore pre-eminently welcome. After a delicious meal, a hot bath and a good night's sleep, we went into our baskets full of anticipation for the next day. Groningen has it! And the only address that we dare to mention without violating someone's privacy is http://www.landgoedwesterlee.nl/

Oh yes: the cream-white / red Russian is not in Groningen, but at a thrift store on the Apeldoorns Kanaal. Also nice…

    • "Whoever does well meets well" my grandmother always blessed me better. Is there a story in the DS that apparently was not at home during our visit? Do you know any more classic enthusiasts there?
