FT Bonito - Verkeerd Afgelopen?

A mail exchange has been going on for a while with someone who knows how to stand an FT Bonito that has either been forgotten or has ended badly.

On the pictures we see an FT that we had seen before. Then he was in better condition.

In its current state, the beautifully lined kitcar is a nice complete project for the coming winter. And when you have it ready, we will put it in AMK.

But in the meantime, we have seen what such an FT Bonito actually was. An FT Bonito is a kit car that appeared on the market in the late 60s and early 70s. The letters FT stand for Fiberfab Transformation, a German company that made polyester bodies, very inspired by the lines of the Ford GT.

The polyester body is on the chassis of a VW Beetle. Together with a few parts of other cars, a relative was possible at the time low budget build a sports car. In addition, the sports feeling had to be something between the ears. Because a standard 1200 cc Beetle block made the FT such an 140 km / h fast. But VW's building kit system naturally made it possible to hang everything in the stern. Up to Porsche blocks.

The Bonitos have a long and complicated history. The brand, rights and production have lost quite a bit. They have even been posy kits from the Netherlands. At least: the rights were here, the production was in England.

And if you are interested in kitcars, buggies, we recommend that you become a member of the buggy club and look for the book "the buggy, our Holy Cow" anyway.

That book gives a historical overview of the buggy in the low countries from 1969. It is issued by the General Buggy Club and the ISBN number is 90-901-3260-0. Take a look at 'boekwinkeltjes.nl'

Approximately 100 of these cars still exist in the Netherlands, of which approximately 20 currently has MOT approval.

FT Bonitos are kitcars. But in the meantime they are no less classic about it.

But what applies to all kitcars applies to the FTs: The result is only as great as the skills and the amount of money that the maker has put into it.

In the meantime, good, beautiful specimens yield between the 10-15 D euro.

The telephone number that belongs to the FT is apparently 06-20326728

And of course there is an FT Bonito club: https://www.ftbonito.info/
