MeccDuring the classic car event InterClassics & TopMobiel, from 17 to 19 January 2014 in MECC Maastricht, the 100th anniversary of the Italian car brand Maserati will be extensively highlighted. This makes '100 Years Maserati' one of three exhibition themes this year.

Partly due to the rich history of Maserati, the organization has chosen this exhibition theme. "During the 100 year that Maserati has been in existence, this leading car brand has undergone interesting changes and developments, making it an icon in the automotive world. The brand has certainly not stood still in the past century, "said Erik Panis, Manager Exhibitions at MECC Maastricht.

MeccHistory Maserati: The car brand was founded in 1914 by the six Maserati brothers. From the mid-twenties to the fifties, the brothers focused on the production of racing cars. The famous Tipo 26, 250F and the Birdcage in particular were very successful. They also started building street cars at the end of the 1950s. The brand built a reputation as a producer of exclusive GTs during the 1960s and 1970s. Because Citroën the brand took over in the seventies, was the hydraulic technology of Citroën found in the cars from that moment on. In the late 1982s, De Tomaso took over the company. With the development of the Biturbo in 3200, he made the brand accessible to a wider audience. Later the factory was placed under the management of Ferrari. The first model under their reign was the XNUMXGT, which had an eight-cylinder biturbo engine. Then they switched to conventional engines without turbos. These can still be found in the current models. Maserati has recently been added to Alfa Romeo within the Fiat group.

No fewer than 30 very exclusive Maseratis can be seen during InterClassics & TopMobiel. Exclusively for this event, the Apeldoorn Louwman Museum is making one of their masterpieces, the Maserati 8CM Monoposto Grand Prix Car, available. The visitors of InterClassics & TopMobiel can also view the Tipo 26.

Maserati 8CM Monoposto Grand Prix Car This first Monoposto (single-seater) of Maserati drove the best drivers of all time, including Tazio Nuvolari, Raymond Sommer and Piero Taruffi. The latter took third place in the Coppa Acerbo with this racing car. A rule change in 1933 made the car no longer suitable for the Grand Prix. The then owner Taruffi decided to convert the car into a two-seater by widening the body. After Taruffi sold the Maserati 8CM to a South African driver, various races with the race car were driven there. The Rand Grand Prix in 1937 and also the Grand Prix of South Africa in 1938 belong to this. This masterpiece has been in the possession of the Louwman Museum since 1988. The car has now been returned to its original single-seater shape.

Tipo 26 The Tipo 26 is the first racing car built by Maserati. Not only was this car built in 1926, it was also raced for the first time in this year. Due to the excellent specifications, top speeds of 180 to 200 kilometers per hour were already achieved at the time. After Anthony Hartley renovated the car with original parts, J. Cumming and Ronald Gunter took part in the Southport and Saltburn beach races in Great Britain in 1934-35. InterClassics & TopMobiel InterClassics & TopMobiel is the largest classic car event in the Benelux and will take place from 17 to 19 January in MECC Maastricht.
