Last Sunday you could already enjoy his Mercedes-Benz 450 SL from 1979Ronald is passionate about Mercedes and has several classic models, including this beautiful, original Mercedes-Benz 280 SE from 1974. This model, once a luxury car that was far out of reach for most people in the 70s, is now an affordable showpiece for those who want to drive with class.
History of the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE
The Mercedes-Benz 280 SE, part of the W116 series, was introduced in 1972 and quickly became known as a technologically advanced and luxurious car. The model was a pioneer in terms of safety and comfort, with features including a reinforced body structure and high-performance braking systems. The W116 series also formed the basis for the modern S-Class concept, which to this day stands for luxury, reliability and technical sophistication.
Restoration of Ronald's Mercedes-Benz 280 SE
The car was found in a sad state. The engine was broken, the sills needed welding and the front fenders were badly affected by rust. Restoration seemed like a risky investment, but heart won over reason and so Ronald started an ambitious restoration project. Only a deep-felt passion for classics can breathe new life into a car like this.
With his technical knowledge and a pair of right hands, Ronald took on the challenge. First, he found an original engine that had only run 150.000 kilometers through the network of classic car enthusiasts. The engine is a 2,8-liter straight-six with two overhead camshafts, good for 177 hp (130 kW) – an impressive power for its time and a high efficiency thanks to the mechanical fuel injection. The characteristic, full sound of the six-cylinder engine will thrill any car enthusiast.
In addition to the engine replacement, Ronald also performed welding work himself and replaced the mudguards. The chassis was cleaned and reinforced, after which the car was ready for a professional paint job. An original Pullman interior is still being sought to complete the restoration.
A driving experience full of nostalgia and comfort
A classic like this S-Class is not only a means of transport, but also offers a driving experience that few still know. Driving a Mercedes-Benz from the 70s is a quiet, yet stylish experience. For Pietsje and Ronald, the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE is more than a car; it is part of the family, a piece of home on four wheels. “The Benz gives a feeling of peace and refinement like no other car can,” says Pietsje. The quiet cruising in nice weather, a “nice drive” together in the Benz, makes every ride special.
Car addiction and connectedness
Ronald describes himself as a bit of a “car addict”, a passion that Mercedes has woven through his life as a common thread. “The Mercedes-Benz 280 SE gives me a good feeling, whether I’m having a bad day or am happy.” He and Pietsje regularly share this connection with the brand and with other classic car enthusiasts during gatherings such as “starcars and coffee”. They enjoy the passion for classic cars together with like-minded people.
The Mercedes-Benz W116 280 SE
The W116 generation was characterised by innovations in safety and driving comfort. For example, the W116 was the first time that Mercedes-Benz introduced the anti-lock braking system (ABS) in a passenger car, an innovation that would later be found in almost all modern cars. The model was offered with various engine options, including the straight-six from the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE, which was popular for its smooth performance and reliability. The W116 has since become an iconic classic and a sought-after collector's car.
For anyone who wants to enjoy the world of classic cars, it might be a good idea to take a look sample issue of Auto Motor Klassiek to request and immerse themselves in the nostalgia and stories that bring these cars to life.

A little too much work, never start on it again, almost as bad as a newspaper Opel from that time and parts have become much too expensive, I would take good care of it!
What a load of rubbish.
The M110 engine never had hydraulic valve lifters.
Engine was produced until 1986 and has always had manually adjustable valve clearance.
By the way, one of the best engines Mercedes has ever built.
Some people want to say something just to say something, unfortunately.

Very nice car, congratulations!
I had a w126 280se on LPG myself, pay attention to the valve seats
Indeed, until 1978 it was valve adjustment for the 280, from 1978 to 1980 it was hydraulic I think.
