Purchasing classics there

A few years ago we came across this piece of unique MG history in Great Britain and we were able to make one MG enthusiast happy with it, because the thing for sale for only £ 575. Whether that ever succeeded?

It is the only trailer ever built by the MG factory in Abingdon-on-Thames! The story is put together that way. In the early 1970s, a certain Anthony Day worked at MG as training manager and had the assignment to turn trainees into high-quality craftsmen. He lived in the nearby town of West Hanney. Thinking of his retirement he bought a nice cottage in Devon. With this he immediately created a new problem for himself, because he wanted to take some possessions, furniture and so on, but he lacked suitable transport. The answer was found quickly. He mobilized a number of his trainees who were instructed to build a trailer for him. The 'gentlemen' were instructed to assemble the parts in the factory. In the Special Tuning department, a used Austin Mini Cooper 'S' subframe was scored that was still equipped with a set of competition shock absorbers and brake linings. That subframe formed the basis for the trailer. Such a subframe namely had a cable-operated parking brake that was built up to cable-operated overrun brake. All sorts of things were collected in the factory, such as lighting, wheels, but also remains of sheet metal and such. The side, front and rear panels, for example, are made from remnants of sheet metal. The wooden floor, for example, comes from cupboards where the workers could store their personal belongings before the war. When they were replaced almost fifty years later, a (small) part was able to do so recycled turn into…! After services, the trailer was bought from Anthony Day by a former chairman of the British MG Car Club and was found by chance in Ireland (!) Years later by the current owner. And because the thing was only there, it was put up for sale for £ 575,00. Of course we paid attention to this in AMK, but have no idea how the history continues. Maybe one of our readers? The trailer for a standard (50 millimeter) tow ball was now on radial tires. Because the original diagonal tires were 'gone'.

Photo: It all looks a bit simple, but below the line it is actually MG history….
