Research by car insurance comparator UnitedConsumers shows that more than 40% of Dutch car owners choose car insurance other than the recommended coverage. Only a small majority of 57,3% follow the advice, based on data from policies taken out between July 2023 and June 2024 via UnitedConsumers.

Percentage that follows advice per coverage

UnitedConsumers' general advice for choosing coverage is based on the age and current value of a car. The research focuses on how often this advice is followed. This boils down to the question at which current values third party liability insurance is most often chosen, at which current values third party liability limited comprehensive coverage is most popular and from what current value the majority opts for third party liability comprehensive insurance (all risk).

WA: This coverage is recommended for cars older than 10 years and with a current value lower than € 2.000. WA is actually chosen for these cars in 72% of the cases. Of the other insured persons, the majority (24%) opt for the more extensive third-party liability limited comprehensive coverage.

WA limited airframe: The advice is to choose this coverage for cars between € 2.000 and € 10.000 and an age of 6 to 10 years. Only 39,7% actually choose this car insurance based on this advice. Some insured people prefer third party liability coverage for cars worth €2.000 to €5.000. With current values of €7.000 to €10.000, many participants opt for all-risk instead of WA limited hull.

WA hull (all risk): According to the advice, this coverage is best suited to (relatively) new cars up to 6 years old and with a value of € 10.000 or more. This advice is followed most often, as the results show: approximately 82% of owners of a relatively new and expensive car opt for the most complete coverage.

Choosing coverage is tailor-made

Although the current value and age of a car are important factors when choosing insurance, the research shows that these are not always decisive. A large majority also takes personal circumstances and wishes into account. The research mainly shows that choosing coverage requires advice and customization. There are several reasons why car owners deviate from the advice. “For example, we often see that car owners have a clear preference for either the cheapest premium or the most comprehensive coverage. That is why a relatively small percentage opts for limited liability insurance, even when this coverage is recommended,” says Jorg van Rijn, expert car insurance at UnitedConsumers.
