Purchasing classics there

"Everyone is nice." That is of course the wise lesson in classic country. One person doesn't like Japanese classics at all, the other knows for sure that the early shovelheads were the last Real Harleys. And a Zastava? Which has been converted into an Abarth look-a-like? Is that an abomination or heart-conquering?

Whatever you want, the result

One goes for a restoration that the manufacturers only achieved with machines that were specially prepared for the press or large shows. Others make sure the technique is okay and they 'restore' the looks of their dream classic by sponging it with Owatrol. As long as you do what you like and do not proclaim that opinion as the Only Correct Truth? Fine. And so you may be faced with the question "What do I do with my tank?" The initial step was already a farewell to the great originality thinking: It seemed a good idea to equip the petrol tank with an extra tap in order to be able to eliminate the annoying connecting hose between the tank sides.

After riding Russian for a quarter of a century I knew that Ural tanks are somehow quite rare, that there are too many Dneprt tanks and that here in 'The West' we are recognizing the Urals and Dneprs as true classics and that 'we 'they therefore prefer to keep it as original as possible. They deserve that respect too.

Personally, I think more Russian: "Does it fit or can it be made?"

Then it will be alright. And so two - “why don't you take three with you, just in case?” - deeply lived through one Dneptrank with two cranes. It was Russian dark blue, had the suggestion of the piping once pulled free by a Russian, and it was kind of pretty cool. But it had so much patina that it just looked scruffy.

In AMK someone advertises who manufactures instant patina. To tackle a whole classic like that? I find that a little less emotionally. But the man does a very nice job, for example by 'blending' newly used sheet metal completely invisibly with his authentic environment. The approach was to do the same with the 'new' tank. The most affected top surface was therefore cleaned of its most troublesome imperfections, the flanks in better condition were given a mild peeling with polishing paper. Entrance the spray cans of the Action. They are much less good than the 2K aerosols that you can buy at real stores. But they probably didn't have that in Siberia either.

The blue flanks were taped

The top of the tank was lovingly given about the same amount of black paint as a Rolls-Royce. Then the Regiobode sheets were removed from the sides and the entire tank was painted in clear coat.

The result?

Master sprayer Theo Terwel could laugh endearingly. But it also has a great frame of mind. Ural and Dnepr specialist Richard Busweiler nodded appreciatively: “It doesn't look like much. It really is. ” The neighbor who is a painter looked very skittish and made frightened, defensive gestures.

I myself am more than satisfied and happy with the result. Frans Mandigers will not immediately see me as a threat, but I had created my own patina. Pleasantly occupied with the most important incidental part of our life. That's what it's about.

And now some real patina ...

    • That's right! My brother has lived on the other side of the Netherlands for 20+ years. In this way I learned to look at 'Ollanders from the Flemish vision. And then you see strange things. But the fact that, where we are proud of our corporate directness, you see only rude bluntness…, see the 'fat necks', that does' Ollanders too short. The fat neck factor is common among our 'Westerners'. AutoMotorKlassiek is made in the east of the country. And people are usually less emphatic there. We don't just talk, we also listen.

  1. “” ”” And it was kind of pretty cool actually. But it had so much patina that it just looked scruffy. ”” ”

    What a wonderful sentence.
I think we can now nominate Dolf at the Ako for a literature prize.

  2. You could of course also cover the entire artwork with a large tank bag. At the same time also useful for a map, and to transport the eggs when shopping. I've had one for years to hide the scratches on my tank.
