Fat Guzzis always have a hard time: Getting so hot that the oil becomes 'self-cleaning', the water particles contained in it will boil out again. There are even Guzzi drivers who make a kind of apron for the carterpan when they go - always nice - to the Elefantentreffen. The sludge phenomenon can be recognized by thick black oil or a mayoniase-like layer of deposits on, for example, the inside of the valve covers and the oil filler cap. The oil / water emulsion actually condenses on 'cold bridges' there.

How sludge is created

Usually sludge arises because too short journeys are made with an engine. (20-30 minutes). Although it can also only disappear after a longer period of time, after all, it is all about the evaporation of water from the oil. With large volume crankcases (Alfa Romeo) and lower temperatures it can take a while. Due to the volume change in the engine due to the movement of the piston, air is sucked into the crankcase and blown out again. Because there is moisture in the air, condensation forms in the engine. This water mixes with the oil, resulting in (white) sludge, our. mayonnaise' is created. (By the way, it can also occur with a leaking head gasket, so water can also enter the lubrication system, so watch out for a white pluming exhaust.) In the summer, sludge formation occurs much less because the engine then reaches temperature faster. .

Black sludge is seen less as an emulsion, but really as heavy oil pollution.

Slugging is a signal that the engine oil has a hard time. The oil can oxidize as a result of which the lubricating effect is greatly reduced.

A slugde polluted block is easy to clean with resources from the car specialist's corner (Brezan, van Silhout etc.). The products are usually called 'Engine flush'. Use and results are simple and effective.

Use the engine at operating temperature with a complete change of oil and filter. Thick layers of mayonnaise in valve covers can first be removed manually.
