The Internet is a shadowy world

Purchasing classics there

Not so long ago someone from abroad saw the BMW of his dreams on the site of someone else from abroad. The text accompanying the photos made it clear that it was about his absolute dream bike in pristine dream condition. The price was very hefty. But perfection costs money.

When the emotion tsunami had subsided, he looked at the ad a few more times

And somewhere he got the idea that there was some noise on the antenna. He continued his search on the Internet. And he found the same photo that became nice and big when clicked. With a little extra effort, he could then read a piece of text and a name on a tin of enamel paint. Searching for that text and name brought him to the Netherlands. The BMW viewfinder contacted the Dutch paint supplier. He also found the story very interesting and distributed the photo to his field staff with the question whether they recognized the location. The man in charge of the Eastern region reported: “That is at Theo Terwel, from Vorden. He paints and restores many classic BMWs. ”

The story came back to the BMW dreamer by the way traveled

Who contacted Theo Terwel. And Theo Terwel was surprised. The photo had indeed been taken with him. Had been in AMK and ended up on Het Net. The other foreigner had picked up the story and made it just a little too good to charge an extra £ 2.000. Without any consultation with Theo Terwel. One foreigner and Theo Terwel could appreciate the neo-liberal entrepreneurship of the other foreigner. But they got straight to business nonetheless. This gave the story a happy ending.

Neo liberalism for beginners = theft & scam

But apparently there is a fairly large group of people who do business on the Internet with borrowed photos and a good story. Whether delivery will be made after (down) payment? This falls under the law on games of chance. Gerard Aalders has written a book about all the ranching that the late Prince Bernhard has done in his life. That is called 'Nothing was what it seemed'. And so it is often on the Internet. By the way, that book is not recommended for lovers of the House of Orange ...

But it can be even more blunt than with the first BMW story

A BMW enthusiast once drove to our deep south after extensive email contact including the exchange of photos. And that is quite a jerk from our Far East. The almost perfect BMW R90S that he thought he found there turned out to be a tired R90 / 6. When he approached the seller that it was really not the bike he had received the photos from, the seller patiently explained: “I have put it up for sale a few times before. But then no one responded. Well, then I took pictures from the Internet and adjusted the story a bit. But you know what? You're here now. If you just tap three miel now, then it is yours. ” So it was not him. The money remained in the purse and the bus remained empty ...

An address in a neat, quiet neighborhood

Going home with an empty bus also happened to a trader who never wants to talk about it again. The affair also ran over the Internet. The selling party gave an address where delivery in the evening and cash payment would be made. The address was in a parking lot of a very quiet, quite upscale neighborhood. When our acquaintance arrived there with his bus and the cash, two men appeared who informed him that they wanted the xxxx euros that he had brought for the motorcycle.

We therefore recommend that you first check whether you can find your dream classic at one of our advertisers. Take such a first dirt cheap subscription to AMK. We will be grateful for it. For example, even give a search to a well-known trader. Because apparently you sleep very badly when you are threatened with a firearm and when two young entrepreneurs run off with barely ten grand. And don't do business after sunset.

The original was burned. But these are two honest replicas. If you know that, then there is nothing to worry about

That is fake.NOS: Before that year, a Honda should still be in a wooden crate

Confusing: Moto Guzzi V7 Sport meets BMW R90S

Never do business at dusk

This is not the best example. But 'sellers' can simply get their photos from the Net

  1. Ha, when I was a student in Automotive Engineering in Apeldoorn, the car market in Utrecht was flourishing. The stories that were so stupid that they were almost fun again were countless. For example, a car was sold that you were only “allowed” to buy without looking under the hood. There was a block of concrete in there, that kind of creative trade. In many cases you cannot imagine that people fell for that.
Anyway, I also bought my first car (a Giulia Nuova 1300) at a real Alfa dealer in Hilversum, before that always private, etc. Price was above Bovag limit for warranty and a real dealer, so for the first time I didn't crawl under everything etc. and bought the car, because it had to be right... It took a damn short time before the clutch was out . Warranty turned out to be up to the corner, despite Bovag. And after a few showers it rusted hard, not short while it looked so beautiful. Sprayed over with watercolor, so something like that.
My biggest bad buy of all time, what a scam and what a stupidity of myself hahaha. Since then, despite the dealers, they have been extensively checked, which of course does not give a 100% guarantee, but much more security!

    • Ha! Those were times. There was a large campers' camp on the A2. There wentiemad to score a block for his Mercedes diesel. He was warmly welcomed. Everything would be fine. He got coffee, drink and cake. When he arrived there was indeed a diesel block next to his car. After payment he noticed that it was the block from his own car…. That was neo liberalism 1.0. And the police did not dare to go to the camp

  2. It can also be done differently with the internet. I had a nice 84 'Honda in the category under € 1000.- on the marketplace. I was contacted via WhatsApp by someone .. from Lithuania of all places. Money has already been transferred and the bike will be collected from the weekend. So purely on trust.

  3. That's right, that's what happened in the past. Decades ago, wanting to collect cars several times with cash for the trade, and then meet up in a shadowy industrial estate. Turns out they are trying to rip you off the money. Sometimes there was a wreck, but sometimes no car at all. Fortunately, it always ended well because we can run and drive fast :).
