The O-rings blues

Purchasing classics there

Good. So the new year started with a classic whose new - really new - gas tap was leaking. And the floater needles of the almost really new carburetors did not close either. That was therefore three liters of gasoline on the garage floor.

The case has evaporated and smoking is allowed again in the garage. And do missing O-rings? They were therefore solved by what gasoline should pass and that such crazy things from your time of ignition demands. But new O-rings? They would simply be in every disposable lighter. And then it appears that that is not entirely the case. At least not with the copies that I have demolished.

Yet that kind of hassle is not a nuisance. It keeps you busy and there are solutions and alternatives. This is in contrast to new motorcycles where even changing a flashing light cannot do without software support.

Fortunately, they find those alternatives via the Internet well. You should be careful with tips on forums, because forums are often a sort of sanatorium for cloud walkers and arch supports. But a lot of original, or reference or alternative? That is just to be found. Although you have to be careful with 'reference' parts. A lot of stuff that is supplied from China for BSA to Zündapp is only suitable for sale. Not for normal use. It doesn't cost anything. It's nothing.

What is funny is that a lot of classic enthusiasts apparently do not know that a lot of unexpected parts, things and intermediate or emergency solutions can simply be found in real time and can be bought at the local car parts trade. Brezan is of course a standing name there, but that company is already so streamlined that a lot of loose little stuff and knowledge has disappeared from the range.

For some of the smaller or independent car materials there are still small containers with few common items and the experience and willingness to help think along. That sometimes has very funny results. For example, the unavailable shims that control the distance between the pulley halves of the dynamo drive on old Moto Guzzies are just the same as those used by VW with the Beetles. The 'similar to' story also applies to the ignition modules of many two-valve BMW boxers.

They can still be ordered at BMW Motorrad. For quite a substantial amount. Mo from the local car necessities shop said: “Gosh, those things were on Opels too. I still have a few. You can have one for ten. But you can also first take a look at De Timp, the car slop. The manager of the Timp allowed me to peek under hoods. I found the module that I was looking for. The scrap yard boss looked at it critically. “Is that for your wife's car? Buy something else for her ".

I told him that this thing was not for an BX, but for an old BMW motorcycle. “Only two euros. If it had been for your wife's car you could have had it for free. " Classic driving is not priceless. You just have to have a little respect for people and technology.

  1. Ever when replacing the radiator of a Citroen Xsara at one size was not the sealing ring, was on a Sunday so going back was not an option, after searching in the area we found a sealing ring of a sink at the neighbor, fit exactly and is up to the trade-in, 3 years later , sit still .
