In the National Liberation Museum in Groesbeek (near Nijmegen) there is an exhibition on Reconstruction up to and including 24 August after our Eastern neighbors reports returned to their territory. This exhibition shows how that was approached at the time. You will also find a Harley Davidson with sidecar with which the WegenWacht started in 1946. The (twenty-five) motorcycles were left by the Canadian liberation army. It is also made clear how the Dutchman then dealt with Germans, the new (American) culture, the Marshall Plan, even the Cold War and the beginning European cooperation that ultimately led to the new drama that we know as the European Union. For further information, opening times and admission prices, consult the website www.bevrijdingsmuseum.nl.
Photo: After years of riding such a mighty Harley Davidson, some Road Guards were pleasantly surprised in August 1951 by the message that from now on a 200 cc. scooter-with-sidecar had to be patrolled between The Hague and Rotterdam or Rotterdam and Gouda. What a treat that must have been?
