TABAC Classic GP. A celebration of competitive recognition and tribute
This weekend, the TT Circuit Assen was completely dedicated to racing history during the TABAC Classic GP. For three days, visitors enjoyed a unique mix of legendary cars, motorcycles, and new memorable moments at the 100-year-old TT Circuit. In particular, there was a moving tribute to one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time.
Classic Team Lotus brought the Lotus 97T to the Circuit van Drenthe for a tribute to Ayrton Senna. The car was originally scheduled to race in Assen with Bruno Senna, the legendary driver's nephew. Due to a broken arm, he was unable to drive. He was, however, present to meet the fans. The black and gold car was therefore driven by Chris Dinnage, Senna's former chief mechanic.
For many, this was an emotional moment, as they witnessed the car in which Senna achieved his first Grand Prix victory. This happened on April 21, 1985. He won the Portuguese Grand Prix at Circuito Estoril in pouring rain. During the sun-drenched event, the tribute in Assen was impressive. A special highlight: the Brazilian ambassador was present in Assen, and that's just one testament to the fact that Senna's legacy in Brazil remains priceless.
Motorcycle enthusiasts also had plenty to enjoy. United Classic Racing brought over fifty classic motorcycles to the track. One particularly noteworthy addition was the Norton RCW588 with its unique rotary engine. And, as is now tradition, riders with a Grand Prix background, such as Bert Smit, were also present. There was also a strong field of many NSU machines. The German manufacturer launched the legendary NSU Sportmax 70 years ago, and these machines were once again on the track where they celebrated successes back then.
The program also offered spectacle in every corner. From the Touring Car Legends, where iconic DTM cars from the 1s entertained the crowds, to the ADAC Graf Berghe von Trips Cup and the Fast Seventies Benelux, which provided exciting battles on the track. Demonstrations with historic Formula 5 cars, including the roaring Jaguar RXNUMX with Klaas Zwart behind the wheel, provided goosebump-inducing moments.
On Saturday, September 6th, the TT Circuit was flooded with hundreds of mopeds during the JPMB BromfieTTs. From Kreidlers and Zündapps to Puch Maxis and scooters: participants of all ages could bring their own mopeds to the TT Circuit to ride together and enjoy the unique atmosphere. There was plenty to do and see, not only on the track. The paddock also offered plenty of opportunities for visitors to take a look. They could admire beautiful classics. And that's not all: there was also room for interaction with the drivers and photo opportunities with Bruno Senna. This year, the TT Circuit was once again transformed into a grand open-air museum. The atmosphere was friendly, passionate, and full of admiration for the rich history of automotive and motorcycle racing.
With this edition, the TABAC Classic GP once again proved its worth as an event for racing fans and classic car enthusiasts. They enjoyed legendary Formula 1 cars, classic sports and touring cars, and authentic Grand Prix motorcycles in the "Cathedral of Speed."
