From Beetle to rarity. Original Sandman Buggy surfaces in Burgum
We recently visited Funky in Burgum for an update on the Van der Velde Special, which we discussed in Auto Motor Klassiek Issue 10-2025 published a comprehensive and in-depth report. While we were inspecting the custom-built coupe from Friesland, and company owners Sander and Femme were updating us, we spotted another unique vehicle: the 1968 Sandman Buggy. It's in excellent condition and has a unique history.
In 1963, the first owner purchased a new Volkswagen Beetle. He decided to give his car a completely new life for a few years. In 1968, he had his previously purchased Beetle converted into a Sandman buggy at Sportscar Special in Haarlem, which was run by Loek Nerden. This makes this example one of the earliest generation of Dutch buggies, along with the well-known Ruska models. What makes this Sandman truly special is that it has remained completely original since its conversion: a pure, authentic vintage VW buggy in exceptional condition.
Purple glitter
The buggy still wears the original lilac glitter gelcoat it was painted in when it left the workshop in 1968, a color even listed on the old paper registration certificate. In 57 years, it has never been painted or cosmetically altered, making this example absolutely unique. Built as a ready-to-drive buggy—not a kit—it left the workshop in Haarlem fully assembled. Photos of the construction process still exist, as do photos of the first owners proudly posing with their new Sandman.
Unprecedentedly original
The bodywork is in exceptionally original condition. The lilac glitter gelcoat is still present and shows only minor, charming signs of age. Poor maintenance, incorrect paintwork, or incorrect accessories have never affected this car. All lighting is original Hella, and details such as snaps, stickers, license plates, and gauges have also been preserved. The chassis is in excellent condition. And very attractive: the buggy body also still bears the original Sandman logos.
Technology: reconditioned 1600 cc engine
Technically, the buggy is equipped with a reconditioned 1600cc engine with dual carburetors. The exhaust fumes come from a stainless steel engine. The engine is in excellent condition and delivers more than enough power for this lightweight buggy. The front axle is height-adjustable, and the brake cylinders and brake hoses were recently replaced. The engine was also serviced, so the buggy drives, steers, and brakes as it should: completely roadworthy.
Unique piece of Dutch buggy history
The interior is also largely original and features Porsche 914 seats, complemented by a matching corduroy back seat. Authentic elements such as the original gauges and accessories complete the look. The Sandman Buggy comes with its original registration certificate, which is marked "lila," and a valuable set of photos of both the 1968 conversion and the original owners. Combined with its exceptional originality, this makes the Sandman a unique piece of Dutch buggy history.
Offered in Burgum
The classic VW specialists at Funky in Burgum are offering this unique Buggy, and the price is certainly reasonable: €13.750 is what the young Frisian owners are asking for this Sandman Buggy. For car enthusiasts in this scene, this is an absolute opportunity to make a unique Buggy with a story to match, theirs. Anyone who buys this classic will receive the original soft top with removable side windows, front and rear bumpers, a tow bar, and various accessories, including a set of wing mirrors.

I came across this similar buggy on board a ship in 2015
