That MMBS scheme, that's a strange thing. Because now every 16 year-old Mercedes can drive.

The RDW puts it this way:

A motor vehicle with a limited speed (MMBS) is a motor vehicle that is intended for performance
of work and does not require a license plate. With this application form you can indicate whether you
you want to leave your vehicle as a motor vehicle with limited speed or as an agricultural or forestry tractor
Register. You can also indicate the classification or category of your vehicle.
And further:

Limited-speed motor vehicle (MMBS)

A motor vehicle with a limited speed (MMBS) is a motor vehicle that is intended for carrying out specific work and does not require a license plate. The RDW is regularly asked whether an existing passenger car can be converted into MMBS.

Information

On the website of the RDW explains which procedure must be followed for this.
However, this does not mean that you can go on public roads with this converted vehicle. The RDW can only approve the vehicle and cannot check whether you are using the vehicle for which it is intended.

The vehicle must in fact meet the definition as set out in the Vehicle Regulations:

  • motor vehicle with a maximum design speed of no more than 25 km / h, not being an agricultural or forestry tractor or a moped, not equipped for the transport of people and arranged for delivery or collection at places close to each other of goods, or
  • motor vehicle with a maximum design speed of not more than 45 km / h, not being an agricultural or forestry tractor or a moped, not equipped for the transport of people and equipped for carrying out work off roads, roads or on work on, in, along and above roads, or
  • motor vehicle with a maximum design speed not exceeding 45 km / h, with no more than eight seats, excluding the driver's seat, not being an agricultural or forestry tractor or a moped combining one or more trailers that are equipped for the transport of people.

Usage requirements

In addition, MMBSs also have usage requirements, an insurance obligation, etc. The police check these usage requirements. The advice is to contact the police to see if the vehicle in question can be taken on public roads.

Anyway refrain from converting your classic or young timer ...

  1. Would you also qualify for MRB exemption with a severely worn coupling? Somewhere else I read that someone wanted to convert an Audi convertible for 45 km.

  2. Better conversion to mmbs 45 km. The law says that with a mmbs 25 km you do not need a driver's license but the insurance requires a moped driver's license. And a moped driving license is also the requirement to be allowed to drive an 45 km vehicle.
