The Volkswagen T3 Caravelle is a versatile vehicle that can serve as a luxury passenger car, touring car, commercial vehicle and family vehicle. The Caravelle GL model, the top model of the series, is at the top of Johan's list. He particularly appreciates the comfortable and elegant driving experience, something that this car still offers decades after its introduction.
The T3, produced between 1979 and 1992, was the third generation of the iconic Volkswagen Transporter. While the T1 and T2 were known for their air-cooled engines, the Volkswagen T3 was soon given a more modern liquid-cooled engine, which provided improved performance and reliability. The T3 was therefore a technical advance compared to its predecessors, which made the model attractive to both private individuals and companies.
Comfort and design
The Caravelle GL, a luxury variant, became especially popular in Europe because of its high level of comfort. The vehicle seats eight people, and the layout and use of high-quality materials contribute to a premium experience. Johan's Volkswagen T3 Caravelle is still in remarkably good condition; the stylish paintwork looks as good as new after 37 years, a testament to the durability of this model. In southern Germany, where his Caravelle originally comes from, the buses are popular for their solid construction and excellent driving characteristics, characteristic of German quality standards.
A time machine on wheels
During his rides, Johan notices that the Volkswagen T3 Caravelle is a time machine that evokes nostalgia for many. Stories and memories come to life when other enthusiasts recognize the bus. The T3 thus creates a special bond among owners and admirers. With its angular design and characteristic appearance, the T3 has become an icon that bridges the gap between past and present.
Car awareness
Johan recalls: “My car awareness actually began in the 80s, when classics like this T3 were still on the road every day. Petrol was paid for in guilders, and the VW bus appealed to the imagination of entire tribes.” Through a digital search, Johan completely overhauled the engine, which ensures the bus’s reliability and performance for years to come. On his way, he found a well-maintained Volkswagen T3 Caravelle GL in southern Germany with unique Projekt Zwo bumpers and a roof spoiler, details that give the bus an attractive and distinctive look. After the purchase, they agreed that the owner would bring the bus to Arnhem, so that Johan could immediately register it with the RDW.
For a thorough technical inspection and overhaul of the 2,1-liter water-cooled engine, Johan brought his Caravelle to René Visser, a specialist on Texel. There, the engine was completely overhauled, which ensures the bus's reliability and performance for years to come.
A 37 year old “new” bus?
Johan emphasizes: “The only reason my bus is called ‘old’ is because it is compared to the newer VW buses. To me it still feels new, like I am driving in the 80s.” His Volkswagen T3 Caravelle is a source of admiration on the road and compliments keep pouring in. Johan concludes with the words of fellow enthusiasts: “The older, the more fun, the more beautiful.”

Yes, fantastic vans! At the time (I think '99) I had taken over one with 9 places as a garage without really looking at it properly. It was badly dented and "old", I thought "For export". A bit by chance we took it for a spin with the two daughters (I think 4 and 6 years old then), and they were immediately hooked on that car. We then left for a trip to France in the summer. We even drove over the Grand Saint Bernard pass! The children asked us not to drive too fast, so that the trip would take a long time, they liked it that much. We actually haven't driven it for a long time, it is in good condition - it was completely refurbished a few years ago. Rust is something that needs to be kept a close eye on! The engine also has new cylinders and pistons. (They can simply be replaced separately, even with the engine in the car.) ... but I can't bring myself to sell it. I later bought a syncro. The 4×4 version. This is one of the first, from 1985 and furnished as a basic camper. Also very cool to go on a trip with, but the engine is actually too light in relation to the weight. It is only a 1900cc boxer, with a small 80 hp. (DG) PS. The car of the report unfortunately also has visible rust on the right rear: it seems innocent, but it is venomous because of between the plates.
I recognize that feeling, Johan. A T3 is not just a vehicle; it is a companion with character. Nice to see that you respect the original state. Enjoy it!
What a beautiful Caravelle, Johan! It is clear that you maintain the T3 with care. Not many people have the patience and love to keep such a van in this condition. Compliments!
