Automatic concepts

That Volvo had a future, has been proven with this Volvo 1800 ES. Even 52 years after the first production, this car remains a beauty. The legendary Volvo 1800 found its way into living rooms all over the world. At the wheel was once Roger Moore, better known as The Saint, alias Simon Templar. On the television screen he could be seen in his white Volvo, while he outsmarted criminals with high-speed chases.

The Volvo 1800 ES

The first models of the Volvo 1800 were manufactured in the early years at Pressed Steel in England. In 1963, production moved to Sweden, where in addition to the standard 1800S, variants such as the 1800E were also developed. In the early 1800s, the 1800 underwent a major change, with the models getting a completely new rear end. This resulted in the fastback design of the 1971 ES, produced from 1973 to XNUMX, which both emphasised the sporty appearance and provided more spacious luggage space. This change marked an important step in the development of Volvo, combining elegant design with functional practicality.

Technical specifications and design of Volvo 1800 ES

The Volvo 1800 ES is not only a feast for the eyes, but also a model of robust technology. Under the bonnet was a powerful and reliable engine block that, thanks in part to the overhaul of the engine and the gearbox with overdrive, made the car suitable for both daily rides and sporty touring. During the restoration, a lot of attention was paid to the interior. New upholstery on the seats and doors, and the application of sound-absorbing panels on the floor, ensured that every ride was a comfortable experience.

The story of an enthusiast

Alex, a passionate collector, says: “I have owned this 2015 ES since 1800 and immediately became a member of the Volvo Classic Car Association. This club is all about conviviality, but for me the parts supply and technical advice were also very important. The registration for the Volvo 1800 ES register was essential, especially because a lot of technical work had to be done to breathe new life into the beautiful Swede. The interior was given a complete makeover, and the overhaul of the engine and gearbox with overdrive was high on the list. All work was carefully recorded and shared in the club magazines of the Volvo KV and the 1800 ES register.”

The Volvo club and community

There is a special bond within the 1800 ES register, where the enthusiasm for a classic car from a time when cars still had their own character is central. The pride in owning such a classic is expressed in every detail. The club organizes technical days and annual trips that provide a lot of driving pleasure and relaxation. These meetings offer members the opportunity to exchange experiences and technical tips, and to enjoy the authentic character of the Volvo 1800 ES together.

  1. It is also called Schneewittchensarg. Personally I think the coupe is more beautiful. A beautiful specimen.

  2. One of my dream cars (I'm afraid it will remain a dream…..)
Almost the same model as the 'polyester' Reliant Scimitar….just a different type of engine
I don't know which one came first... in any case, these were (I heard) the first sports cars in station model (could be right)
Simon Templar drove the P 1800, not the 1800 ES version

  3. Really a beautiful car. Once again I have to stand level so that the drool can run out of my mouth on both sides. And I agree with the comment that it is a shame to have all those emblems on the front. Just hang it at home against the garage wall and let the grilles shine in all its Volvo glory 👍🏼

  4. I have been driving Aamzone since 1982, a solid and reliable Volvo.
Back then you could buy two Opel Records for an Amazon.
An uncle of mine always said that doctors and lawyers drive a Volvo and you can travel many kilometers without any worries.

    • Truly a magnificent example of the 1800 ES. I do agree with the amount of shields (too many) in the grille, but that is a personal taste.
Where has creativity gone today in developing new models?
“Everything used to be better” is usually not true, but the car industry should look back more often. Fortunately, you see several brands (including Volvo) introducing retro models!

Once again, a beautiful example of the 1800 ES, keep it (or is it her?) in good condition!

      Kind regards,
      Ton
