A story about a trendsetter, a story about a father and son with a shared passion: the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet. Made for enjoyment, this car clears the heart and enriches the soul, with an unsurpassed driving quality. Rienk and Johan's love for these classics runs deep, something that becomes clear in their stories and memories that are interwoven with the history of their cars. But first, let us introduce the classics themselves.
The Black Rabbit Convertible (1986)
In 1986, this black metallic VW Golf Cabriolet rolled off the production line, intended for the American market as a “Rabbit Convertible.” The American version, more luxurious than the European model, was equipped with unique details such as triangular hinged windows, a third brake light on the trunk lid, additional meters on the center console and sturdy bumpers that were specially designed for American regulations. These iconic features give the car its own character, with an exceptional equipment that optimizes driving pleasure. In 1992, this convertible began its 'naturalization' in Europe, and in 2005 it became the property of Johan and his father Rienk. Since then, it has been a constant companion on their joint journeys.
The Wolfsburg Edition (1985)
Then there is the Golf Cabriolet Wolfsburg Edition, which was a popular promotional model for Americans in 1985. Volkswagen introduced this edition with a powerful 1.8 JH engine and K-Jetronic injection system, combined with exclusive BBS RM rims and a sporty leather interior, which gave the whole a sporty, luxurious look. In 1993 the car found its way to the Netherlands, and Johan was able to add it to their family collection in 2007. For the collectors market of that time, this model was a striking choice, loved for its elegant finish and reliability.
A love that has begun
Johan's love of cars started at a young age, working at a scrapyard together with his father. One day a VW Golf Cabrio passed by - a GTI version with a 1.1 engine - and this was the starting point of a lifelong 'golf movement'. It was the first love, the first car, that special feeling that many recognize. Many years later, the attraction of the Golf Cabriolet remained. In 2005, the opportunity arose to buy a USA Golf Cabrio, a black metallic Rabbit in excellent condition. Due to Johan's limited budget, it became a joint property with his father, which doubled the pleasure.
Documenting automotive history
In 2007, Johan and Rienk discovered the Wolfsburg Edition in a collector's garage. The former owner even told us that the car had been in a private collection for years, hidden in an attic, which made this special find even more unique. The stories behind these cars are a source of inspiration for Johan; as soon as he starts talking about the work he and his father did on both cars, he becomes a real chatterbox. Every detail had to be carefully restored to preserve the original state. It is an example of how the love for classic cars contributes to the preservation of rolling heritage.
Like father Like Son
The VW Golf Cabriolet creates a special bond between father and son. Both cars receive attention and care, and this passion has strengthened their relationship. A man can drive a Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes or Porsche and feel alone, but the VW Golf is different. For Rienk and Johan, the Golf is more than a car; it is a companion that does more than just transport. This bond is invisible but indestructible – a shared love for an iconic classic that tells a story of generations and tradition.
