The battery in a car is an essential component that requires regular maintenance, especially if it is a classic car. Unlike modern cars, classic models are more susceptible to discharge and wear due to outdated technology and longer storage periods. Proper maintenance not only helps to extend the life of the battery, but also increases the reliability of the car. Statistics show that with proper care, a battery can last up to 30% longer, which is essential for classic car owners who rely on a well-functioning battery. In this article, we will provide you with some basic tips to keep your classic car battery charged and operational.

Basic battery maintenance tips

1. Regular cleaning and inspection

Keeping your battery terminals clean and free of corrosion is crucial for optimal performance. Dust, dirt, and corrosion reduce conductivity and can cause your battery to drain more quickly. Use a simple solution of water and baking soda to gently clean the terminals. Additionally, regularly inspect your battery for cracks and leaks, which can be signs of wear. Dutch automotive expert Jan van der Heijden notes, “Regular cleaning and inspection of your battery prevents premature failure and increases reliability, especially in classic cars.” This will help ensure the long-term reliability of your vehicle.

2. Avoid deep discharges

Deep discharges are damaging to batteries, especially in classic cars that do not have modern safety systems. An easy way to prevent this is to disconnect the battery when the car is not used for a long time or to connect a trickle charger to keep the charge at the right level. Deep discharge reduces the capacity of the battery considerably, which often happens faster in older vehicles due to less efficient electrical systems. Jan van der Heijden of Autoparts24 Kia Niro battery information advises: “Classic batteries respond poorly to long-term, deep discharges, so it's smart to keep them charged.”

3. Correct charging methods

Charging the battery correctly is essential for a long lifespan. Overcharging can lead to overheating and electrolyte evaporation, which drastically shortens the lifespan of the battery. Preferably use a trickle charger that provides a constant charge level without peaks, to avoid voltage fluctuations that are especially harmful to older batteries. “Batteries of classic cars are sensitive to voltage fluctuations, so fast charging should be avoided,” says Van der Heijden. Slow charging helps to keep the electrolyte levels stable and prevent damage.

4. Storage Tips

Long-term storage requires special care for the battery. To prevent deep discharge and sulphation (build-up of lead sulphate crystals), it is recommended to remove the battery from the vehicle during the winter period. Store the battery in a cool, dry place and ensure that it is fully charged. Lower temperature-controlled storage reduces the risk of wear due to heat and humidity, which is especially important for older lead batteries. Below is a table showing the influence of storage conditions on battery life:

Storage conditionsLifespan (%)
Cool and dry place90-100%
Warm and humid place40-60%
Fully charged100%
Deflated50-70%

5. Check the battery condition

Regularly checking the battery charge helps to detect potential problems in time and extend the life of the battery. Check the voltage with a voltmeter or multimeter to see if the battery is in good condition. For most batteries, a voltage of 12,6-12,8V is ideal. Van der Heijden emphasizes: “Monthly checking the battery voltage helps to recognize early signs of wear and prevent possible malfunctions.”

6. Choosing the right battery when replacing

When replacing a battery, it is important to choose a model that matches the requirements of your classic car. The wrong choice can lead to performance problems and a shorter lifespan. Consult the car's manual or an expert for recommendations. Using a battery with the correct voltage and capacity prevents problems with the wiring and protects against damage to the vehicle's electrical systems.

Extra tips for classic car enthusiasts

  • Avoid sulfation: With conventional batteries, especially lead batteries, sulphation is a common problem, especially if the battery has been unused for a long time. A trickle charger helps to prevent this problem by maintaining a stable charge.
  • Checking the water level in older lead-acid batteries: Some classic cars still use lead batteries where the water level can drop due to evaporation. Check regularly and top up with distilled water to prevent damage.
  • Store the battery on a wooden surface: This reduces the chance of leakage and corrosion, as wood absorbs moisture and provides a stable environment, which is especially beneficial in cold and damp storage areas.

Conclusion

Regular battery maintenance is essential for the reliability and longevity of a classic car. Simple maintenance, such as cleaning, checking the battery voltage and proper storage, can extend the life of your battery and prevent unexpected problems. Even minimal attention can make a big difference in performance and reliability. With these tips, you can ensure that your classic car continues to run reliably and avoid unnecessary repair costs.

  1. Personally, I think a trickle charger is nonsense; fully charging it once every 5 or 6 months and then disconnecting it again has so far been sufficient for the batteries of my classic cars to be able to use them for 8 to 10 years without any problems before they need to be replaced.
The cars (with battery) are kept in a garage where it is never less than 10 degrees C in winter, which also makes a difference.
