In the spring of 1966, BMW announced a new era with the launch of the BMW-02 series, starting with the 1600-02 in Geneva. This marks the birth of a series that will acquire legendary status and definitively put BMW on the map.

The beginning of an icon

The BMW 02 series debuts with a 1573 cc engine that produces 85 hp. The sporty TI version followed in 1967 with a more powerful 105 hp engine. However, the TI quickly gave way to what is considered BMW's definitive breakthrough: the 2002. This 2-liter version debuted in February 1968 and was joined in June by the TI variant, equipped with twin Solex carburetors from the 1600- 02 TI. The standard 2002 produces 100 hp, while the TI is good for 120 hp.

A permanent fixture in the BMW range

By 1971, the BMW 02 series is an established name within the BMW range. The combination of design, engine power and an advanced chassis contributes to the fame of these models. BMW is making various changes; the 1600-02 becomes the 1602, with a newly designed grille, continuous and rubberized bumpers, and various interior innovations.

A strategic compromise

The 1802, positioned between the 1602 and the 2002, makes its debut with a 1766 cc engine. The highlight, however, is the introduction of the 2002 Tii, which replaces the TI. The Tii is equipped with the mechanical Kugelfischer injection system from Bosch, which produces a power of 130 hp and a torque of 177 Nm.

Innovation and challenges: Touring and Turbo

In 1971, BMW introduced the three-door Touring, which proved less popular than its two-door counterpart. Launched in 2002, the 1973 Turbo faces challenges; turbo technology is still under development and the oil crisis is causing problems due to high fuel consumption. Nevertheless, the Turbo is a technological tour de force. BMW also released an electric variant for the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Perfecting the series

BMW continues to develop the 02 series. In 1974 the series underwent significant changes, such as adjusted track width, rims with cooling holes, and internal innovations. The suspension and shock absorbers are optimized, bringing the series into its final years before making way for the 1975 Series in 3. Introduced in 1502, the 1975 ultimately marked the end of the BMW 02 series in 1977. With a total production of 861.940 units, including the convertible versions, the BMW 02 series enjoys iconic status to this day.

  1. In 1966 I was immediately impressed by the handling compared to our 220 Mercedes 1963SE. Wonderful car on winding roads, such as the old Zwolle-Kampen road.
