French classic: Psychological refuge for Duco Wiersma.

Purchasing classics there

Duco has a passion for old-timers and classics. Like a nomad, he travels from place to place in France in search of Citroëns, Renaults and Peugeots. Old garages and farmhouses are interesting to him, because vehicles from bygone times are sometimes found there for reasonable prices. When you get to his shed you will be amazed. Sometimes a debilitating pile of rust, but also better remains of special French voitures and even very beautiful impressive beauties that can get back on the road.

Funny experiences

In France people often keep driving until the car breaks down. After that, the car is parked in the garage, shed or even in the garden. It is understandable that special stories are told about car life, the owners are almost all colorful. Yet sometimes there are mixed feelings, then an appointment is not made at a garage or private address, but in the middle of the village behind the church. The idea is that there may be obstacles, is the data correct? Is the car really in the condition that was first told?

Human knowledge

Fortunately, the experience and human knowledge are such that it always goes well. He feels more than safe when surrounded by his classic cars. That is also why we are not looking for an explanation why he is so passionate, not even the psychologist knows the answer. We stick to the search for a perfect kind of happiness. The indescribable feeling that something special has been found again. A touch of obsession is allowed, help is not necessary.

Surprising reactions from old notes and car magazines (1951).

  • Auto en Motorbedrijf: As a technical creation in this 2 CV extremely important. Driving it is like being in a Buick, and that's no exaggeration!
  • Car review: With all the lack of external charm, the 2 CV has proven to be economical, simple and robust in everything.
  • Car champion: All the French agree, it is better to have a 2 CV, you are dry, you can move for little money.
  • The Auto: It steers light and precise and it tastes like more.

Philosopher of Joy

Duco Wiersma proves with his hobby that you can escape from everyday reality. With his hobby he gives his classic objects a new life on the road in the Netherlands. If it is restored or repaired, it will bring good luck to the new owner, who may later pass on ownership. That is the only way to protect the heritage through generations. A piece of appreciation for all these rescues is in order: c'est incroyable.

  1. No more beautiful old-timers than the citroën 2CV from 1972. I own one of those and also an old AZU from 1961. Restored myself and put it back on the road. Originally from France.
    Beautiful technique, great to drive.

  2. Well, rust, rubber cracks, mold on leather or cotton, hard grease, etc. Respect for people who stay ahead of those kinds of problems. As long as sure ducks and stuff, preserved, keep going! Otherwise there are only pictures left. They don't drive and don't make any noise

  3. Such a storage in an old conservatory is good against rust, and better than leaving it outside, but when looking for a storage, I was quickly convinced that storing a classic in a sweltering conservatory on a hot summer day is not good for the interior and rubbers.
But you have to store your classics somewhere.

    • “Locating” classics is much cheaper in the north than in the south or west of the country. After all, people (want to) live there, so the land rent is much lower. And a greenhouse = not everything, unless the state treasury 🤪
