Purchasing classics there

Amsterdammers can no longer get a new parking permit for older cars from the autumn. If you already have a permit for an old car, you can keep it. The regulation for older vans and passenger cars applies to gasoline cars prior to July 1992 and to diesels that are older than 2005. It is one of the measures with which Alderman Choho of Sustainability wants to reduce air pollution in the city. The Amsterdam newspaper “Het Parool” reports this.

Tolerance policy for those who already own older cars
Choho wants to discourage Amsterdammers from purchasing an older car. Residents who already have a permit for an old car can keep it until they buy another car. If this is "too old" for the permit, no new permission will be granted. Owners of an older car that are on the waiting list also receive the parking permit.

Older cars have a small impact
TNO calculations show that a number of 2017 parking permits were issued in 804 if the extinction scheme 804 had not been introduced. That is about seven percent of the new permits. The impact of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter is therefore called "small" by "Het Parool". However, there is considerably less soot in the air. The share is eight percent of the emissions within the city itself. In total, more than ten thousand parking permits have been issued for cars for which this will no longer be possible.

Package of measures
The Amsterdam extinction scheme is part of a whole package of measures for cleaner air. Other measures concern the environmental zones for delivery vans, taxis and scooters, the prelude to emission-free buses per 2025 and the stimulation of electric cars. The taxi park in Amsterdam is also undergoing a "change of treatment", with the ultimate goal of driving only fully emission-free taxis in 2021.

KNAC: "Making an exception for vintage cars"
No mention has been made of an exception rule for vintage cars. In a first response via social media, the KNAC indicated that such a rule is desirable with a view to heritage conservation.

  1. Will there also be environmental zones for, among other things, the diesels that sail across the IJ? It is a myth that particulate matter only comes from cars; it certainly never blows in the Netherlands.

Economic interests are conceived from behind an office by people who don't know anything about the citizen and the street.

  2. The car bullying continues! You can't hear these fools about the gigantic air pollution from aircraft with their chemtrails! Strontium, Barium, aluminum and sulfur dioxide! 100.000 old diesels cannot compete with that!

    • True, but there are huge economic interests behind it. The owner of an older car cannot compete with that.

What has struck me recently: I see plenty of classics in commercials and TV programs.

      • Yes, they show beautiful classics from the 80 years where we could make nice hobby kilometers to ignite the crazy measures of the robber knights of Rutte. So emigrate to Germany. They have a better understanding of classics and drive pretty tax-free there!
