Purchasing classics there

The new edition of Auto Motor Klassiek back in the store. And in it you will find many beautiful themes. In one of the stories the VW Scirocco is described. The reason for this was the report we made with Peter de Roy and his Scirocco GT 1.5. This month we not only describe Peters' beautiful classic, but also the backgrounds.

When you make a story about the VW Scirocco you know that you are highlighting a special car. The VW Scirocco surprised many visitors during the presentation at the Geneva Salon. The sharp lines of the wedge-shaped Sport Coupé in Bestform were received very positively, and not much later the press was also full of praise. The Scirocco I became a success, with more than half a million units sold. But before the first series-produced Scirocco model rolled off the line, a lot of water flowed through the proverbial Rhine.

Mysteries

The necessary questions arose around the development of the (future) Scirocco. Why was VW in such a hurry with the Karmann-Ghia Typ 14 successor? And what did the developers and testers encounter? Why was Giorgetto Giugiaro so keen to develop the future Scirocco together with Wilhelm Karmann GmbH? What were his starting points? What was a condition for Volkswagenwerk AG to give the green light to project EA398? What were people doing in Osnabrück when the production-ready Scirocco was already being rolled out from a marketing point of view? You can read the answers to these and other questions all in the latest Auto Motor Klassiek Edition.

Development range and Peter's Scirocco

On February 4, 1974, the first series production Scirocco in Osnabrück left the line. The Scirocco I was built until 1981. In the report we of course also describe the developments of the model during its production period. And of course Peters' flawless 1.5 Scirocco 1980 GT is central to the story, and you can read our experiences and our impression of the car in detail. And, for example, also answer the question of how the D'Ieteren picture is under the hood of the Scirocco report. Did Volkswagen still assemble Sciroccos in Belgium?
