Classic car enthusiasts will drive through the Netherlands next Sunday against the environmental zones. The protest ride starts at 11.00 on P + R Meijersplein in Rotterdam.
The oldtimers start in the harbor city. This is where the country's largest environmental zone is located. Subsequently, a course is set to and from Utrecht, Amsterdam and The Hague. In the Hofstad the protest ends on the Malieveld.
With the campaign, the Rotterdam Classics Foundation, which has already campaigned against the new environmental measures in hundreds of cars in the center of Rotterdam, hopes to get The Hague politics to undo the environmental zones.
Many old-timers are no longer allowed to enter the inner cities of Rotterdam, Utrecht and Amsterdam, because their cars do not meet environmental standards. Offenders in Rotterdam will be fined from 1 May. This is already happening in Utrecht. There is discussion at a local and national level about the fact that those involved in the cities are continuing the established environmental zones. Recently, the KNAC (Utrecht) and the Rotterdam Classics Foundation (Rotterdam) have already demonstrated that the effects on air quality as a result of the established areas in the cities concerned are negligible. They are also disproportionate to the costs for government and citizens. Furthermore, different criteria are used with regard to permitted motor vehicles and types of vehicles that are and are not permitted within the demarcated areas.
The introduction of an environmental zone is not supported everywhere. It was recently announced that Eindhoven declared a resolute no to an environmental zone for passenger cars. Cost factors, lack of clarity and unrest among the population, among other things, were arguments for not setting up the zone in question in the largest city in North Brabant.
