The Volkswagen Typ 3 is no longer an underrated classic. People will readily pay for a good example from the model series launched by Wolfsburg in the early XNUMXs. It was every reason to highlight this Volkswagen, and we took a few copies from a few old acquaintances.
You know the De Roy family by now, Peter and Thomas are avid fans of air-cooled Volkswagens. The Beetle forms the main part, but over the years a great soft spot has also developed for the Typ 3. Years ago the first Typ 3 came into the picture, a 1600 TL from 1972. This car is currently 'under construction'. And in the meantime a few more Typ 3 examples have passed in review. Peter and Thomas currently jointly own a beautiful VW 1600 TL from 1970. And Thomas exchanged his red Variant from 1970 for a truly beautiful Squareback with American history. Both copies are equipped with an automatic transmission and are in top condition.
Of course you read in Auto Motor Klassiek 01-2024 a driving impression of both cars, which also gloried during a beautiful drive in the Achterhoek. In the Extensive Column you can read the report of this, a special day in which the meeting between Typ 3 and Typ 4 specimens was central. But within the seven-page report in the magazine we discuss the Typ 3. And there is a lot to say about it. And to show, because the report includes images taken by photographer Bart Spijker.
The Typ 3 was introduced by Volkswagen, among other things, to retain Beetle drivers for the brand. VW had no alternative within the 1500 cc class (Opel Rekord, Taunus P3), and therefore introduced a new model for this class. In accordance with good VW practice, the models and technology were further developed. The careful motor evolution, the annual fine-tuning, the technical adjustments, and the arrival of the 1600 TL and the Karmann Ghia Typ 34 are mentioned, for example. And when did the Typ 3 get a long nose? You can read all about it in the magazine.
And there is a lot to tell, and so much that the purchasing advice will soon be presented to you separately. Yes, through these columns you can find out more about the points you should keep in mind if you are in the market for a Ponton, Fastback or Squareback of Volkswagen's Typ 3.
The VW Typ 3 story is one of the many topics in the magazine, which is full of special articles, regular features and everything that makes your classic car experience so wonderful. Don't have the magazine at home yet? Then a visit to the kiosk offers relief. And of course you can also subscribe. Anyway: don't miss AMK 01-2024.
I have had the engine in my pickup for almost forty years.

I have a type 3 pontoon from 1962, so one of the first to come on the market
We regularly tour with this classic in the summer and receive many positive reactions
I remember the time in the 70s when you would get angry looks if you arrived at the scrap yards with such a model. They were then also offered for demolition en masse, while demolition workers had long since lost interest in them.
Now they are quite rare.
