Amid the rich assortment of Alfa Romeos, jumps the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint, a coupe that was manufactured with great care between 1962 and 1968, may not immediately catch the eye. Yet, thanks to its unique Bertone design, this car is a pearl that certainly deserves a closer look.

In early 1962 the world was introduced to the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint, which succeeded its illustrious predecessor, the 2000 Sprint. The latter was part of the famous '2000' series, which also included models such as the Berlina and the Spider. These models continued in the '2600' six-cylinder versions. Although the structure of the 4.50 meter long 2+2 coupe remained largely intact, the addition of an extra air slot in the long hood made a subtle but noticeable change.

Under the hood of the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint

Driving force behind the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint is a robust six-cylinder in-line engine with a cylinder capacity of 2584 cc. This engine, reinforced by three two-stage Solex PHH 44 carburetors, delivers a powerful 145 HP. This motor power is smoothly transmitted via a fully synchronized five-speed gearbox. The switching system of this Sprint is distinguished by the fact that the lever is located on the floor, unlike the Berlina where it is attached to the steering wheel.

In terms of speed, the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. To handle these speeds safely, the car is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes at the front and 'propeller ventilated' drum brakes at the rear. The driving forces are transferred from the drive shaft to the rigid rear axle via a conical hypoid construction.

A car for the elite and the government

De Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint was not only popular among wealthy car enthusiasts, but was also popular with Italian government agencies. The Italian Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of the Interior ordered specially modified versions of the 2600 Sprint for services such as the police and the Carabinieri.

Universal appreciation

Various car enthusiasts and experts praise the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint for its striking sporting features. Its refined exterior and luxuriously finished interior, which comfortably seats four passengers, contribute to its legendary status.

A source of inspiration for many

Originally designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Bertone for the 2600 Sprint, the 2000 Sprint has inspired many later models, including the Giulia-based Sprints. A total of 6999 copies of this beautiful coupe were manufactured.

  1. A very special brand with very beautiful cars. They are often styled on sheet metal. Each individual part looks beautiful and even more beautiful in detail and when put together. The interior is far beyond 'premium', you just want to drive it. It looks that inviting.
However, the technical details (undercarriage in particular, sometimes almost old-fashioned in nature) often contained a 'proposal for improvement'. In short, very sexy cars.

  2. What a beauty! The power source is the epitome of excellence with a great 'Laufkultur', as the eastern neighbors would call it. Really cool to see!!
