A sensor that alerts the rider when the sensor detects that the rider is tired… See, we hadn't had that yet.

In the meantime, the better kind of motorcycles are equipped with more software than the lunar lander ever had and there are so many thoughtful and co-decisive electronic aids in the display that sufficient safety features have been built in for ADHDers who are on a diet of Xtasy and Red Bull during the evening rush hour. rain. And what that Really Old Motorcyclist said, and that is only partially reasonable: “All that electronic stuff. Just learn to drive”.

So is all that electronics really necessary? Nah… But it is possible. So it goes into production. But in a universe where marketers and engineers live their entire lives, is there still room for the fairly basic form of transportation that is motorcycling? Is it typical for a large brand dealer to say that his customers usually ask him to 'set' the trip meter, outside temperature gauge and fuel remaining indicator and leave the rest of the information on the full color display as it is?

Of course there are people who get a kick out of all electronic gadgets and gizmos. But these are often also the people who are more happy to plan and enter the most beautiful routes from behind their screen. To then 'drive' them on Google Street View for verification. We recently spoke to someone who had planned a ten-day ride with even the locations for lunches and lunch times by a margin of 15 minutes. “Motorcycling is an adventure. Motorcycling is freedom”. However?

And then get stressed because there's a roadblock and your schedule is messed up. That's nice. We recently got on the bike for a while. Because it's fun to stupidly blast over a stretch of unlimited Autobahn with a speed of just under 100. The cold is good for the thermally sub-optimal ex-Soviet boxers. Because it was cold and because it occurred to us that in Bad Sassendorf, 200 km from Arnhem, you can muddle through the whole day in the salty, warm spring water for little money. You can sit in the sauna and then score a great meal for little.

You don't even need your unsurpassed TomTom to count down the list of “Oberhausen, Dortmund, Kassel Paderborn, Dortmund and then off somewhere”. After a few rounds of the sauna, the salt cave, a massage, the salt water swimming pool and some food and drinks, we found a hotel on the spot. Including 'Raucherzimmer' and breakfast. Just strolled over the Weihnachtsmarkt. Made another cup of coffee. And hop: full throttle back again. Riding a motorcycle can be so simple and so much fun. Just like life…

The way back over Tomtom's winding route was long and cold. Fortunately, these days there are heated gloves, coffee stops. Heated boots. Heated buddies. Spacious touring tubs. We'll have to talk to Santa about that. But it was a great weekend!

  1. This is life, don't plan anything, Seen all of Europe from Norway to Bosnia, and Finland to Scotland Only plan a global route and at the end of each day there is always a camping / sleeping place to be found somewhere.
Delicious blows from our Hondas (VT1100 and VT500) have driven us over more than 100000 km on the most beautiful roads.

  2. All those electronics, sometimes it makes me sick to death. The presence does reduce your pure driving skills, although it pretends to increase road safety. It is no longer a nice tool or accessory, but a dictating factor. Take the initiative yourself? Not needed anymore.
Why are there suddenly five hundred accidents on Sunday evening, when it starts to thaw?
Lack of practical traction control from the driver himself, despite all the electronics.
You no longer get the chance to (learn to) drive on snowy, icy roads. If caution is the mother of the china shop, building up that experience will also succeed without accidents.
Self-reliance, where does it still exist?

  3. I'm also of the 'what's not on it can't be broken' type and despite a few tricky situations in the past I don't think I'm going to need ABS.
Because I've never died before I'm convinced that I will succeed without ABS 😉
And traction control or launch control… that has more 'café' status than added value on my motorcycles.
No: in the past everything was certainly not better…it was clearer.
On sunny days with moderate frost it is wonderful to ride a motorcycle, especially with a third wheel.
And that you have to stop more often to warm up body and limbs again, that should be seen as an adventure.

    • Sauna is socially established in D. Often even falls under employer welfare and health insurance. The last NL sauna sessions were a bit against me in terms of tanning tan, shaved pubic hair, tattoos and piercings. In D the sauna is affordable. You can score a decent meal for little. And we recently had a 'Raucherzimmer' in our hotel.

    • All memories of an old man. The older. All the more memories. That's nice. Just be careful with that slope. Soon you will want a real house in Lelystads! Greetings back and be careful with your flares on New Year's Eve!
