After the flopping of the M1, Chairman of the Bavarian automobile and motorcycle manufacturer Eberhard Künheim went to BMW Motorsport with the request to devise and build a sporty (er) 3 series. Paul Rosche became responsible for the project. He chose the four-cylinder engine because of the low weight and high torque. The 16 clapper 2,3 liter engine was tucked into the coach, the chassis was thoroughly adjusted, as well as the bodywork and interior. The BMW M3 became a blockbuster and boasts the title of the most successful touring car of all time. The victories on circuits, in rallies, in the rallycross are no longer countable. A quarter of a century later, a genuine BMW M3 is a popular collector's item.
