When visiting the Fire Museum in Borculo, this beautiful Opel immediately attracted attention: an Opel in a pick-up version. The museum offers an extensive overview of firefighting equipment from the past to the 70s. This gives the visitor a clear picture of the history of firefighting.
For adults it is a wave of nostalgia with many recognizable moments and for younger visitors a sense of wonder at all those beautiful fire trucks. The fire trucks and materials impressively paint a picture of how firefighting used to work. A fun and educational experience for both young and old.
Opel Olympia Rekord Pickup
This Opel did not come from the factory in this specific version, but was converted by the Borculo volunteer fire brigade. The bodywork adjustment is truly a work of art. The Opel Olympia Rekord was immensely popular in the 50s. Hundreds of thousands of units left the factory, but still they could not keep up with the rising demand. The Borculo fire brigade chose this model because of its comfort, safety and powerful engine - features that were retained even after the conversion into a pick-up. In emergency transport, reliability is essential and operating economy was crucial to keep finances in balance.
A powerful engine
Opel itself wrote: “The powerful engine is the pride of every Opel owner. The technical refinements applied result in excellent acceleration, while economy has even been improved. Equipment, upholstery, finish and price – everything speaks in favor of the Olympia Rekord.”
Volunteer fire brigade
We all know it: blaring sirens, flashing lights, and the striking bright red fire truck that you see coming from afar. People stop to look. The fire brigade, always in a hurry but responsible, focuses on extinguishing the fire and saving lives. The men of the volunteer fire brigade showed enormous decisiveness, something that is extensively highlighted in the museum. As enthusiasts, we are of course happy that this Opel has been preserved. This way we can show the relics of the past to the new generation.
We used to have the DS at home, a nice Opel, according to Dad. Something like the one pictured here, albeit with a back seat. Father already wanted to drive more economically. That turned out to be one
to be a very big mistake. He had to listen to that mistake for a long time.
I'm sure if this were to happen now, there would be a “Support Group” for it somewhere.
It was child abuse.
That big hideous white sticker... Like a flag on a shit stand, they say in Friesland.
Yes, only in Friesland, they can't do anything about it
He is beautiful!
This may be the only surviving copy in the entire world.
