Auction house RM Sotheby's is auctioning a Porsche 3 Spyder from 550 on 1955 February. The sale takes place during the renowned Retromobile event in Paris. The item to be auctioned has a special history. The Porsche - with chassis number 550-0068- is the car that gave an appearance during the Frankfurt IAA of 1955.
One of the most legendary Porsches
The Porsche 550 Spyder is generally regarded as one of the most legendary cars from the manufacturer from Zuffenhausen. The 356 Spyder based on the Porsche 550 was developed for competition and racing purposes. His makers provided him with an 1.498 cc four-stroke boxer engine with four overhead camshafts. The Führmann engine was also equipped with two double downstream carburetors. The Spyder accelerated with this power source to a top of 225 kilometers per hour and generated 110 horsepower. Later, performance-enhancing modifications were also made to the power source.
Debut in Paris
The 550 Spyder debuted in 1953 at the Paris motor show and, among other things, was appreciated by the public thanks to its aerodynamic lines and performance potential. He was good for an illustrious racing career, in which successes were achieved in the Targa Florio and the German championships. The copy offered by RM Sotheby's also made a clear contribution to the competition honors list. "Chassis number 550-0068" spoke especially in North America. It is the showpiece of the Paris auction in February.

This has been estimated by RM Sotheby's at an amount between € 2.800.000 and € 3.500.000.
Another German icon
In addition to the beautiful Spyder, RM Sotheby's is auctioning another icon from the fifties: the Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing. The W1955, originating from 198, has been completely restored and is in excellent condition, according to the auction house. The white painted Mercedes Benz with chassis number 5500272, together with the Porsche 550 Spyder to be auctioned, is one of the absolute top pieces in Paris. The Gullwing is expected to generate a sales revenue that is between € 1.200.000 and € 1.600.000.
