Without license plate….

Purchasing classics there

There was something about an endearing classic at play. Yes, a barn find. When that forgotten two-wheeler was dug up, it turned out that he had no papers. Besides, there wasn't much more. But the price was right. So the thing got adopted.

After a day of cleaning and looking, an email with an explanation of the situation was sent to the RDW. And this was the answer:

Dear Mr Edward,
Thank you for your e-mail.
You indicate that you can buy a motorcycle. This vehicle currently has no license plate. You want to know what you need to do to get this vehicle registered again. It is understandable that you inquire about this.
If your vehicle's license plate number is listed as invalid or expired in the RDW's vehicle registration register, you must have the vehicle inspected at an RDW inspection station. After approval, the license plate is 'valid' again and you may use the vehicle on public roads again.

Documents you must bring

  • A valid ID.
  • Proof of ownership, such as a purchase receipt.

Examination
The inspection is a check on the identity of the vehicle and whether changes have been made to the construction since the vehicle was first admitted.

Make an online inspection appointment
You can make an inspection appointment via the RDW website

Handling
If the vehicle has been approved, the RDW will send you the registration certificate within 5 working days. In some cases you must first file a tax return and obtain approval for this (BPM agreement) before we send the vehicle registration certificate. You will also receive a letter with a complete ascription code. The RDW sends the registration code one working day later than the vehicle registration certificate. The ascription code is a code that you need when selling the vehicle, for example. The code consists of 9 digits. It is important to keep the registration code properly and separately from the vehicle registration certificate.

After receiving the registration certificate, you can destroy the old registration parts that you still have in your possession. This is to avoid confusion. These are no longer valid. If a registration certificate has already been issued for your vehicle, you must destroy the 'old' registration code. This is no longer valid after the issue of the new ascription code.

The total amount minus the irrelevant things was about the same as the purchase amount. But if you happen to have scored a license plateless MV America for 1.000 euros, that amount is completely insignificant.

With that MV - or with another, desirable and sought-after engine - there is a chance that an investigation into the origin will be initiated. And if your proud purchase (somewhere in the civilized part of Europe) is listed as stolen, then you're screwed.

  1. Special list: there is no MOT for motorcycles, so why is it included in the inspection list?
Furthermore: how was it established in this case that the motorcycle already had a Dutch license plate? If it were an unapproved American import, wouldn't you have to take a completely different path?

  2. But dear Dolf, old serial word, they can't retrieve the license plate at the rdw based on chassis number (provided one was issued earlier, of course)

  3. I would be a little careful about describing helpers within an organization. The civil service and business life are full of ambitious people who want to 'score' at the expense of a presumably benevolent person. The place name did not have to be mentioned in my opinion for a complete story.

  4. Yes that ticks!

Recently I had a hint from an employee of the RDW to solve a (common) problem cheaper.

A living paper license plate of a motorcycle turned out to be incomplete. Completing this will cost more than 40 euros before you can transfer everything. However: just fill in something simple on the website of the RDW and pay about 10 euros and you will receive a fresh registration certificate on a credit card. This is then complete and overwritable in one fell swoop.

It is therefore nowhere on their site and all credit to the desk employee of RDW Zoetermeer.
