We write 1967. Opel's range of models has a structure that appeals to many motorists. Launched in 1965, the Kadett-B is available in a variety of variants and trim levels and continues the success of its predecessor. The next model variant in the series is the considerably larger and fairly fresh Opel Rekord B. The increasingly diverse demands of consumers force Opel to have the range intertwined in the sixties.
Olympia A. Recognizable model. Lots of luxury
Opel's answer is called “Olympia A”. The German brand thus extracts an old and still respectable sound from its own archives. It connects that name to a model strongly inspired by the Kadett B. That car, the Olympia A, has many features of the success number and is adjusted in details. The grille and the housing of the headlights and indicators are the most important distinguishing features of the Kadett B. In addition, the Olympia A - due to its higher positioning on the Opel ladder - is equipped with a three-spoke steering wheel as standard, a more luxuriously finished dashboard, a richer upholstered interior, a fully equipped instrumentation, more luxurious trim wheel covers, whitewall tires, vent windows at the rear (2-door) and more chrome. In addition, a vinyl roof was available at an additional cost.
Cadet and Rekord engines
In terms of engine choice, the buyer has a mix of Kadett and Rekord engines available. The basic engine is not the same that Opel installs in the base Kadett B. The buyer of the Olympia A gets in with the strong 1100 power source from the Rallye Kadett. That means: the installation of two Solex PDSI 35 downdraft carburettors and a power of 60 HP. This engine is seen by the historical press as the perfect partner of the Olympia A. However, for whom the Rallye Kadett power source is not enough, Opel has two more options: the 1.7 CIH (with one Solex 35 PDSI downflow carburettor and 75 HP) or the 1.9 CIH engine (one Solex 32/32 DIDTA register carburettor) of the Opel Rekord. All Olympias are fitted with disc brakes at the front wheels and drum brakes at the rear. With the 1.7 and 1.9 variants, the drums have a diameter of 230 millimeters, with the basic motorization drums with a diameter of 200 millimeters are mounted at the rear.
Three body variants
The Olympia A gets three body styles. It is available in two-and four-door Fliessheck (based on the Kadett LS) and as a Fliessheck coupe (based on the LS coupé variant of the Kadett B, with prominent closed C-pillars).
Built 80.697 times
In contrast to its "founder" - the Kadett B - the Olympia A sells less well. According to the critics, he has too many characteristics of the Kadett-B and is also equipped with a substantial price tag, in which in some cases even the pricing of the considerably larger Rekord B is exceeded. Between August 1967 and November 1970 80.697 copies roll off the band, before the sympathetic and richly equipped Olympia A is succeeded by the Opel Ascona A.
I own the B cadet olympia coupe 1.1 ltr 60 hp sr engine.
there are not that many differences between the A and the B version. I think it was only cosmetic procedures.
Technically they are generally similar.
Nevertheless, I am considering selling the Cadet.
The Olympia A did not exist as a caravan, which is then a Kadett-B caravan that was imported from America, the American Kadett-B, the Olympia front also had the sedan and caravan, the Olympia was only available as a Fastback 2 and 4 door and Coupe
My father was the proud owner of a newly purchased Opel Olympia A in a caravan version and with a 1500 cc engine. I was too young at the time to be able to remember all the details, but I still remember that 1500 rating plate very well. I don't remember the license plate, except that it had the letters MF in the middle. I also remember that the thing went like the fire brigade; especially if you compared that with the previous Kadett!
If I find another picture of it, I will share it with you.
The Opel Olympia A did not exist as a caravan only as a Fastback 2 and 4 door and the coupe that is not an Olympia caravan but an imported Kadett b caravan from America. The American Kadett B also sedan and caravan had the Olympia front of the Kadett b and Olympia models I know all about I used to be a collector of that type nowadays I only do the Ford Taunus 12m and 15m globe
The Opel Olympia-A was certainly more luxurious than the Kadett-B, but it is not true what you write in the article that the Olympia had a vinyl roof as standard, they were also available without a vinyl roof, most are delivered like this I have a number of Olympia models myself had with and without vinyl roof and the folder also contains images without vinyl roof and is in quotation marks with black skay roof
Nice Olympia, right? When I was an adolescent it was clear that there would be an Olympia. Unfortunately that did not happen. Fortunately there are 3 b cadets for the hobby, one of which is a 1500. Everyone happy holidays and lots of classic fun.
